The Science has spoken – folic acid in bread now

Study calls into question Govt's folic-acid block
New research on folic acid has largely dismissed the cancer concerns that led to the Government's going cold on plans for its mandatory addition to bread. Food Safety Minister Kate Wilkinson in August deferred the plan until 2012 but the new research has prompted a call for a rethink. Her move was based on public submissions, sought after a campaign by the food industry against "mass medication" and which highlighted evidence linking the vitamin to increased cancer risk.
But now the Food Standards Agency in Britain, where similar concerns were raised, has released research that concludes: "The new evidence does not provide a substantial basis to change [the] previous recommendation for the introduction of mandatory fortification" of bread flour.

My issue with the folic acid debate was that the decision on our food was being made by an Australian board that has as many corporate food interests as it does NZ votes and I am highly suspicious of the manner in which food safety standards are set with those types of interests in the background. The other issue was a report presented at the conference Kate Wilkinson did a very poor job of media managing that there was a link with cancer and folic acid. The science needed to be settled and this latest research gives us an answer, meaning the Government should move on folic acid in bread immediately. They won’t because the Paul Holmes market see it as a choice issue regarding medication and seeing as males are loath to ever go to the Dr anyway, they write it all off as nanny state PC gone mad blah blah. The Government doesn’t really have the balls to go against that vast chunk of National rump vote so their weak response goes ahead.

During all of this of course will see deformed kids and abortions of deformed kids.

Like climate change, the science was settled long ago.
This report is just the newest to say there is NO LINK.
Something I said when you covered this last, and you took the side of hysteria, not science.

You didn't care about the defromed kids three months ago, WHEN THE SCIENCE WAS SETTLED, why has one more report changed your mind?

1: You made some very valid points at the time.

2: I said at the time that the allegations presented at the conference had to be examined and that we had to wait until that examination, that examination is here.

3: I didn't side with them for the reasons they claimed at all.

Why are you using emotive terms like 'deformed kids'?

Do you know how many defects per year the plan to have folic acid in bread would actually help?

If you think this is a good argument do you think the government should also force people to vaccinate their children - as it is likely that far more children would benefity from this?

Because that's the result.

Yes, Anon did.

Seperate issue.

Why would they Bomber, they were voted on a mandate so to go against that would be to implement a hidden agenda. Are you therefore proposing political parties ignore the wishes of their supporters?

Thank you for your comment brave anonymous poster, could you just show us the mandate National has to ignore science please?

There is certainly science to show how global warming is bullshit but you ignore it so don't hide behind science.

Once again cherry picking to support your agenda.

I don't recall there being a political mandate to be pushed into courses of action by the stupid, blind, deaf and reactionary.

LMAO - Anon that really made my day.

Oh come on Chris, name calling is fun but you have to peg it to a counter argument otherwise you come across as precious. So that's a no on the mandate to ignore science then Chris?

I think so...

...the whole argument was plagued by an infestation of Stupid. It was a stupid debate dragged up by a stupid instance of a stupid press release by a lobby group that picked its fight on the folate in flour and not the iodine they ended up adding to the salt.

Half the information released in this poorly researched, pissed off and badly written press release from the New Zealand Association of Bakers was repeated over and over again, because that's what cheap, poor quality hacks do.

Most of the information in it is bullshit - the reasons for Ireland and the UK not adding folate are pure fiction, and the studies they refer to number two, both inconclusive as to the science and both countered by many other studies saying that folate reduces risk. There's straw man arguments in there - suggesting that folate fortified bread is the only source for pregnant women and that "statistically women aren't big bread eaters".

The whole thing was another piece of manufactured shit by a lobby group trying to press its own interests on the media, and the most interesting thing about it was Whale Oil bitching that he got there first. Waaah waaah waaah.

What a bunch of twats. All of them, anyone who fell for it, Wilkinson for being such a dipshit, Kedgely for joining in and Holmes for being a complete and utter twat without the professionalism to take step back from his own problems.
