Gareth Morgan and Global warming (die deniers die!)

What is a climate denier to do now? Right wing Economist Gareth Morgan has now come out after researching climate change for his book and concluded climate change IS happening and it IS man made pollution changing it. Compare the appalling Ian Wisharts climate denial book Air Con which has been destroyed over at Hot Topic (come Ian, you’ve been buggered bad mate, it’s pretty humiliating for you) and it is clear that this war has stopped being about the science and it is as I’ve always claimed – a cultural war. Those who buy into the wasteful consumer culture of capitalism do not want to concede that those smelly tree huggers were right all along, denier sites like Kiwiblogh and Whaleoil would never admit that the very capitalist consumer culture they worship has an Achilles heal of climate change, they will continue to muddy the issue claiming the Science isn’t settled and continue to deny immediate action is necessary, that’s the right wings position, their corporate chums refuse to pay the actual cost of their pollution and lean on any government to shut down action. Look at how the Agriculture industry was able to twist Labour’s arm to remove a damning Chapter 13 from last years decade long examination of NZ environment that damned the Dairy Industry. Since the right wing have taken over look at how ACT have been allowed to set up a select committees denier inqusition to challenge the science behind global warming, look at how the RMA has been gutted of environmental protections on the pretense it’s cutting red tape when really it’s burning green tape and the scrapping of the ETS, the right wing have no answers here other than denial, their reaction isn’t so much an ostrich with it’s head buried in the sand, the ostrich has its head burried in the sand while National/ACT have their heads buried up the Ostrich’s arse.

The climate is changing in an unprecedented manner due to our pollution and if left unchecked tipping points will be breached leading to climate that makes civilization as we know it difficult to conceive. That is the reality and the longer these deniers are allowed to skip the science so that they don’t have to accept the system they’ve worshiped is fundamentally warping things for the worse, the longer it will be before we can force through the changes needed to adapt to the new realities.

Anthony Giddens (professor at the London School of Economics and one of the creators of the fabled "Third-way" followed by the likes of Blair and Clinton) has written a book regarding Climate change (see http://www.economist.com/books/displayStory.cfm?story_id=13437900 for a review).

As with most things to do with the "Third-way" it is very vague and simplistic however he does raise one very good point. All the downbeat negative messages spewed out by the proponents of Climate change has the perverse effect of switching people off and therefore lessens the chance of anybody making the changes that they believe are necessary to make.

On top of this your analysis lacks anything in the way of viable alternatives. All you do is attack the Capitalists system as the supposed cause of the problem yet fail to realise that noone in any real position of authority is supporting solutions that do away with capitalism. Following your own logic we are therefore all doomed so why bother worrying.

From the link provided:

"Although Morgan and McCrystal have reached a conclusion, they admit it’s by no means an open and shut
case. Two things they are clear about, after having put the book together, is that we’ve learned only just enough
to know how little we know and the science on this whole thing is far from settled. There are compelling
theories, but the evidence has been less than unequivocal, they say. Just how it all works is not fully understood
because climate science is comparatively young and the tools used to try and make sense of climate in the
making is younger still."

But we keep being told the science is settled...

Dubious support for Gareth Morgan. The obvious criticism would be who his 'top scientists' are.

Assuming they are different from the top scientists who have contributed to climate science hitherto (otherwise you could just look up their previous findings instead of hiring them).

So either Morgan's scientists are the best and the established climate scientists are mediocre, or the best scientists are the established ones and Gareth Morgan is talking shit.

"CO2 rises lag behind the initial temperature increase. "

IT'S NOT CARBON DIOXIDE SPEWING OUT OF CAR EXHAUSTS IN THE STATES IT'S CARBON MONOXIDE ISN'T IT BOMBER?

...and yes they are people driving those cars so it is man-made , (anthropromorphic/genic) just try and breath in Chicago for example next to a six lane freeway by the lake where everyone is rollerblading and riding bikes and jogging and getting lung cancer I suspect!

It seems like TIm Flannery from Australia is one of the scientists.

The sad thing is that much of the solution to reducing CO2 emissions is very profitable to do - the carbon savings are a side effect.

My job for the last 30 years has been energy efficiency - using technical fixes to reduce energy use without compromising service. It works.

On my website www.energysolutions.co.nz, under "free stuff" is a paper on the potential for energy efficiency in NZ. Cnclusion: $75B potential saving over 20 years. And that would get us almost all of our kyoto targets (but not by 2012 obviously, because we haven't really started yet).

There is a solution, and it's cost effective, but it's not "business as usual", and big industry in particular doesn't want to lose face by admitting how much money and energy they've wasted over the years.

REBUTTAL BY WISHART TO THE $700 MILLION DOLLAR MAN WITH NOTHIN BETTA TO DO THAN CATCH FISH ON HIS VERY OWN TRAWLA AND NOT PROVIDE REFUNDS FOR PEOPLE BEIN RIPPED OFF ON TRADE ME;

...the "liberal" doomsday theory of choice is climate change 'deniers'/the world is not flat but you can walk on it and dinosaurs were wiped out from a comet or ice age or the big bang millions of years ago but we can still collect their bones and no the world isn't less than a coupla thousand a years old since the pyramids and jesus etc.etc.etc... and by the time the sea levels or temperatures rise high enough or drop low enough in the south while the opposite is true in the affluent/effluent north, we'll all bloody freeze to death without an adequate supply of power, anyway; go nuclear?

OUR MILD AND TEMPERATE CLIMATE IS UNDER THREAT,

...but by the time that will cause a real problem like right now, it'll be communist china's and hong kong's and taiwan's and tibet's problem not our's...what is the point of worryin about the fate of our planet 100 years from now or your own grandchildren's, if you can't even guarantee your own civilisation will even exist by then?

...it is typical of those who rubbish everyone who dismisses those who conveniently use the term p.c to describe all their woes and they are plenty right now, in the politically correct west , that we have these meaningless ,academic, feel-good discussions about environmental issues, at a time when ;

THE BARBARIANS ARE STORMING THROUGH THE GATES IN OUR UNIVERSITY FROM CHINA!

An economist eh ?

So is Ross Garnaut, and his view of things regards 'climate change' isn't worth a damn.
