So Key busts out the gay word to describe a big red jumper the same day he describes Beckham as thick as batshit?
There are two explanations here. The first is that our PM is a dickhead who shoots his mouth off with all the willful ignorance of Michael Laws at a feminist conference or that it's a very deliberate tactic to have Key make comments that resonate with his target bloke voter while generating enough liberal outrage to magnetize those voters towards him.
National have had a horror first year and the need to blunt the erosion of Key's credibility. Having Key gaffe comments that bloke voters would privately agree with takes the focus off Key's unpopular policies and has those voters rally around defending Key's comments.
I'm already sick to death of listening to chumps trying to defend the use of the word gay and explaining that David Beckham is actually as thick as batshit.
We are focusing on the gaffes and not the policy.

The Beckham quote was aimed at self-righteous Rugbyhead types who believe soccer is a 'game for poofs', the type of neanderthals you saw bashing up protesters during the '81 Springbok Tour. He would never get away with making such a comment about an All Black.
Indeed, it makes sense John Key would exploit the basest ideologies of his demographic, like he has done before while in the company of a certain grimy little domestic violence perpetrator, making lecherous comments about female celebrities.
