More pointless law and order crap policy

You would think after enacting the largest erosion of civil liberties in NZ since the water front lockout that National was finished with damaging our legal system.

Apparently not.

Dumping jury trials for sentences under two years, dumping independent Legal Aid, allowing for more trials via TV screen plus vast expanse of Police surveillance powers are all bad enough, so why do we have to put up with junk law and order legislation as well?

This week the Sentencing (Aggravating Factors) Amendment Bill was in front of parliament. This will mean Judges can make assaulting a Police Officer or Prison Guard an aggravating factor at sentencing, the Government claims this is needed because assaults have increased over the last 5 years, which isn't true. In 2009 there were 2550 recorded assaults against Police Officer, by 2011 there were 2014 recorded assaults, that's an assault record that's dropping, not expanding.

This law is looking for a problem to fix and it won't protect one single Police Officer or Prison Guard from being assaulted.

It's more raw meat pointless policy to make the Government look like they are tough on crime.
