The GC will be playing as the Public Broadcasting Titanic sinks

How horrific is the GC? It is beyond contempt.

The GC got their funding by claiming they would focus on the Tikanga of Maori culture - how can shallow, vacuous, tanned drunks sleeping with everything that moves be described as a focus on the Tikanga of Maori culture?

NZ on Air had to redefine the word 'Documentary' to be able to include this hate crime against public broadcasting into their $420 000 clammy embrace. That's a huge amount of money to spend on bullshit when TVNZ7 is about to have it's throat slashed and replaced with a one hour delay of TV One.

If the GC is a 'documentary', a drunk one night stand with a prostitute is a 'cultural experience'.

All the GC proves is that young Maori can be just as shallow, self-involved and vacuous as young Pakeha - well done NZ, equality achieved!

How can NZ on Air justify this abomination when they were so quick to attack a Child Poverty documentary just because it embarrassed the Prime Minister? Just because NZ on Air broadcasts it to the public, doesn't make it public broadcasting. They should at least be honest and rename themselves appropriately as NZ off Air.

What I find interesting about NZers is that they are very much 'proof is in the pudding' type of folk. Public Broadcasting as an issue doesn't feature much, but when NZers watch locally produced TV, they all have an opinion. Watching the GC suddenly reminds us as viewers how important good broadcasting is because what we are being served up is so awful.

This funding decision and the farce of redefining it as a doco that would focus on Maori Tikanga shows that NZ on Air are part of the problem and that if a change of Government occurs in 2014, NZ on Air must be the first against the wall of any public broadcasting revolution. Sadly David Shearer's private dinners with Sky TV doesn't bode well for public broadcasting.

If Public Broadcasting is the Titanic, National are the iceberg and the GC is what will be played as the good ship PBSNZ sinks beneath the icy depths of multi-channel Sky tv pap.

NZ on Air would be the guy who tried to marry Kate Winslet and who chased her and Leo around with a gun.

GC - Ginormous Crapolodrama?

Money for jam as Bailey Mackey told Willie & JT on RadioLive talk-back last week.

Okay Bomber … these dollars could have been used to inform and stimulate the masses via public broadcasting. NZ is much the loser having lost Stratos and likely TVNZ7, I get that … but there is a bigger picture to the ’GC’. I come from the generation of brown baby boomers who whilst at intermediate were forced to learn the ‘Gay Gordon’ and other mad shit european folk dancing as part of standard curriculum. Whilst the pervasive attitude was that Maori were happy go lucky, bad on the piss and generally lazy but could sing and play a guitar. As a young Maori it wasn’t until I went to Australia that I managed to escape these attitudes.

As Maori we rarely get anything remotely positive on mainstream TV and in prime time? And Police 10/7 and crime watch don’t count. My hope is that this show engages with young Maori who are not part of the cultural renaissance stuck on their Xbox and worn down by the ‘oh so subtle racism’ in this country and demonstrate to them; that if you have enough front … anything is possible. Narcissism yes, but it’s a sight far better than carrying a chip that manifests anti social or violent response. I have always believed that if you kick a dog enough it will eventually bite you in the arse and in a similar vain the Maori population can almost be viewed like that wayward adolescent that needs that pat on the back publicly to say … “hey you are a handsome, talented bugger”. This show and the current negative responses by mainstream press say’s a lot about race relations in NZ. It may not be your cuppa tea bomber, but it will do more good for our youth than 500 knowledge wave conferences and 1000 youth programs.

Previous post re-iterated:
I loved the GC because I love seeing positive stories about Maori, no matter how lame, (fuk we get enough shit don't we) but the negativity surrounding the first "GC" show has come as a surprise.

If they were white kids no one would give a toss, we've survived 'Celebrity island', that twat Laws on come dancing show and countless other brain dead shows featuring white kids and a token darkie doing the same lame cheesey shit and it's algud. But a bunch of camera hungry good lookin Maori kids and hey it's a horror smash ... we really haven't come that far since 1860. Everyone would be cheering if they were banged up, poor, bashing their women or doing drugs. But hey that's why they are on the 'GC' in the first place. "What's got two (I's) and can't see? It ain't Mississippi.

I hear what you are saying Marty - but Christ on a bike, if the GC with their shallow vacuous banality is an 'improvement' in terms of stereotypes, you are right. We haven't gone anywhere culturally since 1860.

BEsides which....for Christ sakes.... its a Joooleee Kristeee production isn;t it (and if not, then someone that's obviously one of her protoges. So its not about ANYTHING other than ensuring a good bank balance, and lifestyle for her.
The woman is culturally feral.
Her contribution to indigenous Fijians was disgusting too. Talk about cashing in on the cargo cult.

She's actually quite dangerous bitch although she probably doesn;t even realise it.

If the GC isn;t one of hers, apologies - someone is desperately trying to imitate.

Having said that, it is good to see Maori feeling good about themselves and their achievements, living comfortably and getting a good earn. But let's not pretend its anything but more bubble gum.

Culturally feral, ha ha luv it. I've banged on enough trying to make my point and again totally agree with sentiments re broadcasting $$ and 'cultural ferrals' like Christie. And sadly on this blog most likely venting to the converted. But what I would like to pass on is that the GC does give a fly on the wall view of real kids in Aus. Now that maybe lame and hard to swallow for some but trust me having spent time on the Gold Coast and in Sydney this generation is no different than the last couple that resided there. Diff lingo and look but same shit, chasin tail and pre-occupied in the mirror. Shit in my day it was early 80's and the brown brothers ruled the old garden bar on the GC. That place rocked. 'Miles and miles of vertical smiles', and mate being a hick from Whanganui it was a whole new world and I see the same attitude in this lot as bros from Gissy, Auks ... wherever in Nz that congregated on the GC. The interesting part is that most of my generation never came home and can be found in pockets all over the world. So for some white folks and indeed brown folks seeing this crap looks staged, and I'm sure a lot is. But I can also assure you that for many ageing Lothario's like myself we look fondly back on our 15mins on the 'GC' and what these kids are up to now maybe resonates with us a little
.
