According to the Government, container ships are from Mars and deep sea drilling is from Venus.

National Party spin drs have been frantically claiming that drawing any connection between the Rena oil spill and any possible deep sea oil spill is a nonsense as the two events are utterly different.

Technically, that's true. One is a container ship rammed onto a reef, the other is a hypothetical event that hasn't happened yet, but what can be questioned is the utter impotency of the Government response to date.

National couldn't move fast enough to take the Rugby World Cup away from the Super City when trains failed, yet for what is our worst environmental accident in our history, National respond by dispatching Nick Smith to the scene.

If Nick Smith is the answer, the question must have been, 'what won't help'.

If the Government can't respond to an accident directly outside a Port, how on Earth will they respond to a deep sea drilling accident at a depth 4 times deeper than the Gulf of Mexico oil spill?

Unless we are threatening the deep sea oil drillers with having to listen to Nick Smith talk for hours about blue green initiatives, we will have no protection whatsoever from these types of events, and that reality about deep sea drilling is something National want to muddy as much as our East Coast beaches currently are by this toxic sludge.

Some of the people being interviewed on "Gee-Whizz-Hi-I'm-John-Campbell" have been very eloquent in their denunciation of the deep sea drilling due to the completely incompetant responce to the enviromental catastrophy of a finite fuel bunker on a ship.

No amount of govt pr shills will be able to unhook the two events. It's the first thing that came to mind when the ship started leaking oil days back and nothing was rushed in to assist.

The question is; is the deal with Petrobras a "done deal"? Can we get out of it?

By the way, check out the top pic on my blog post here: http://fmacskasy.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/on-the-smell-of-an-oily-rag/

If petrobras blows up in our face, that pic will haunt Key till his last breath. Much like this one did to Donald Rumsfeld; http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00791/rumsfeld-hussein-19_791932c.jpg
