Mortality rates across the UK

The Guardian has published an interesting map of mortality rates across the UK. It is interactive and can be found here. What is striking looking at this map is that a pattern can be easily discerned and is perhaps of interest for the many people that talk about colonization not having ongoing effects in New Zealand. It is clear that the areas of lowest life span are concentrated in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, while those with the longest life span are concentrated in what would have formerly constituted England. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this map also lines up with maps of the wealth distribution in the UK and voting maps.

Looks very much an urban/rural divide in England too. Not in Scotland, of course, deep-fried Mars bars are available everywhere there.
