Labour just lost Mana: Matt McCarten standing
McCarten to run in Mana by-election
Union leader Matt McCarten is standing as a candidate in the Mana by-election as an independent.
The by-election will be held on November 20th.
The Labour party are standing former TVNZ reporter Kris Faafoi. Hekia Parata, a list MP, is National's candidate.
Genius play Mr McCarten, Labour just lost Mana, but in a great way. Matt will make an excellent member of Parliament and he knows the issues of working people better than any other candidate.
Master stroke by one of the best political players in the game.

Why would the people of Mana vote for someone who has run no campaign (yet) in the area, doesnt live in the area and has shown no previous interest in the area?
And arent you talking his campaign skills up when he ran the Alliance campaign in 2002 and they got like 1% of the vote, or is there something I am missing?
With union popularity at an all time low, why are you so convinced he will win?
Won't he just split the left vote?
Not a chance Bomber. An Auckland unionist, with no party backing, in a by-election a few weeks away? Aint gonna happen Bomber.
Matt's lost it - it must be the contemplation of his own mortality that has driven him to this. Like this might be his last shot or something? I think it's barmy. He'd be better off going for Manurewa or Te Atatu next year, but I guess he doesn't think he'll last that long. He needs a second opinion... political and medical. There's a few campaigns left in him yet.
C'mon people. THINK. Matt's not running to win, but to push labour to adopt some pro-worker policies. With no one credible to the left of Labour, it gets to come up with half (or smaller) measures like removing gst on fruits and veg when it should at the very least be promising to take gst back to 12.5. Then there's the minimum wage, etc. This is a platform. Think smart! By-elections aren't just about winning.
I have to agree with Tim S
Let's be charitable though - maybe he is so utterly modest that he thinks he'll come second to Chris F. Or maybe he's trying to send Labour a message - as in trying to ensure Goff sticks to the direction he's just announced (and that is long overdue)
"C'mon people. THINK. Matt's not running to win, but to push labour to adopt some pro-worker policies."
Yeah, he pretty much knows labour havn't got a chance in 2011 so why not run and try to win a seat. Good PR for his union and higher profile platform. It's all upside to him anyway.
We Mana people dont actually want an oppoprtunist fly by nighter as an MP ta.
I dont think ti is a brilliant move at all, the main risk is a Hekia Parata win by dividing the left vote. Stupid move, we all lose
