About those calls to arm the Police

Drop in NZ gun-death rate
Gun killings in New Zealand have declined the most in an international comparison - even though this country has less strict licensing laws than Canada and Australia. A forthcoming article in the peer-reviewed Journal of Interpersonal Violence, published by United States-based Sage Publications, found New Zealand had "the most pronounced decline in firearm homicide over the past two decades". The study suggests unemployment rates and the availability of heroin are more significant factors in firearm homicides than gun control.

Ummmmm - hold on. Didn't we have Greg hopping up and down screaming to arm the Police (on two very questionable cases, the first was a warrentless search based on 'I smell weed' where nothing short of arms drawn would have protected the Officers from ambush, and a West Auckland case where the Police originally claimed they were involved in a 'gunfight', then it was a 'couple of shots', and finally 'he didn't fire one shot'), and now we get this report that we have declined the most in terms of gun killings???

Yeah, let's hold right off on this whole giving the cops guns all the time thing shall we? Greg's case gets weaker and weaker with each passing day.

it actually doesnt matter what the circumstances were: you cannot have these weapons and fire them at cops or any other person for that matter. trying to question the scenario and minimise the seriousness of those is just pathetic and shows a naiivety of a retard.

Bollocks. A wankers argument Anon. The circumstances are all that matters. There is no reason to arm Police in New Zealand as all it will do is ramp up the level of fatal violence and as was clearly shown with our premium armed force on the North western Motorway the losers will be innocent members of the public.

You do realise the fatal shot was fired by a member of the Armed Offenders Squad don't you Simon?

Are you suggesting the AOF shouldn't be armed? If you are, I think the argument has descended to a new level of stupid.

Yes I meant to say our premium armed police force and no we obviously require a specialist armed division but if highly trained members of this elite corps can fire off several shots without hitting their target once but killing an innocent bystander why would we want PC's on the beat with firearms. Whether you believe the NAR line that guns don't kill people, people do. What is hard to argue is that guns make a lot easier.
As for "Are you suggesting the AOF shouldn't be armed? If you are, I think the argument has descended to a new level of stupid." I suggest you ask the relatives of the poor kid who had a bullet through head how stupid they think it is.

What that kid's family think about it is totally irrelevant - having our AOS go about there business unarmed is a stupid idea.
