Government suggests Student Debt Tax

$50 student debt fee plan for 500,000
A proposed annual fee to be charged to more than 500,000 Kiwis with student debt will net the Government at least $15 million. The fee, expected to be charged at about $50 a year on every person with student debt, is being floated as part of a package to try to recover the spiralling cost of the student loans scheme.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A Student Debt Tax? A tax you get because you are in debt??? This is the type of sneaky strategy Steven 'Hollow Brain' Joyce loves to use.
It was John Key's kite flying game yesterday by announcing he would renege on returning the SAS after their current deployment by using Afghanistan as the background for his press conference, it's now Joyce's turn to fly his student debt tax kite and see if he can sneak it past by playing to negative egalitarian cultural prejudices that pit students against the working class.
A tax for being in debt, what a classy guy.

I don't like that idea. This sort of bullshit is proof that the ministers are just dumb with no brains or they have nothing productive to do all bloody day!!
I didn't work hard for four years, supported by the government to get a degree so I could get a job that paid reasonably well. I support a wife and three kids. A percentage of my salary is paid to reduce my load gradually and over time (interest free of course) it will be paid off. This works well for me and a lot of others that have a loan.
Hey Joyce! If you are ready this - leave the loan well alone if you want me to stay in this country and pay tax to keep food on your tables!!!
I just heard his "reasoning" too.
As I listened, I thought to myself that he could just as easily justify placing a levy (sorry "fee) on all those that had the benefit of tertiary education PRIOR to student loans.
Really what it amounts to is that the Nats were pissed off when interest changes were made. Bugger they thought, no longer the opportunity to MAKE money. We CAN't have people thinking education is a right, next thing you know homos will be wanting to marry each other and the aged and infirm will be expecting we provide an income they can survive on. Oh no no no, the user must PAY.
Gotta agree with the first anon. I know it's only 50 bucks but it's hard enough as it is already, plus, this just seems like the beginning of a slippery slope to another round of "beat up the students". Stuff Joyce.
sounds completely fair enough to me. it is a priviledge having a student loan to allow you to undertake studies and live while doing so. a tiny annual fee sounds very reasonable. stop your crying.
I know we're lucky to be able to have loans (be better if there was no need to begin with), but this seems to me to be the thin end of a wedge. Your patronising attitude only denotes your lake of critical thought anon. It's just more debt to add on to more debt for the "priviledge" of education.
