TV3 Sunrise FINALLY Sunsets

Sunrise, ASB Business canned
Staff at TV3 have been told that ASB Business and Sunrise are getting the axe, resulting in at least 20 redundancies. The morning news shows launched two and a half years ago, but the cost of producing the programmes had proven unsustainable, a statement from Mediaworks said. "We have not taken this decision lightly, and it has been the subject of a lot of debate and discussion at both a board and management level. Ultimately, it has been the board's decision," said MediaWorks TV executive director Ian Audsley. The decision will result in at least 20 job losses across the board but Audsley said TV3 would be able to offer "redeployment" in some cases. "Today's announcement is not a reflection on the calibre of the people involved in the production of the programmes. They're as good and capable a team as any I've seen anywhere," Audsley said. The final editions of the shows were aired this morning.

COME ON - this was sooooooo on the cards. Sunrise cost a bundle, and hemorrhaged ratings. With corporate pruner and playboy Ian Audsley given his chop chop orders it is no surprise whatsoever that this failed experiment failed.

When it launched, it fell flat, James Coleman as the lead host was a mistake and the tone of the show was deeply flawed. Why would I watch conservative lite opinion when I can get the full bodied creamy flavour from Paul Henry? TV3 never set out to offer an alternative to what was already being offered, which is why initially the appointment of Oliver Driver (after his amazing work doing 30minute political interviews on Alt Tv) had such a ratings reaction, finally a liberal alternative to Breakfast. Sadly once I stopped writing the questions for Oliver, he quickly fell back into the dumb TV that saw Sunrise bleed away to nothing.

Perhaps there will be a new position for him at the new digital channel TV3 are launching but with no better strategy being offered from TV3 other than 'we are slightly less conservative than TVNZ' it suggests they still don't understand why Sunrise didn't work in the first place.

So what will replace Sunrise? Well, maybe Campbell live will be moved there as part of the TVNZ and TV3 duopoly decided decision to cut the 6pm news to 3Ominutes.

TVNZ
6pm - News
6.30pm - Paul Henry's new political show
7pm - Close Up (less political more folksy interview - so no actual difference)

TV3
6pm - News
6.30pm - Campbell Live
7pm - some imported high rating sitcom

UPDATE
Dear old David at Kiwiblogh is taking pot shots at me, of all the things he decides to challenge me on (like the climate denial crap he spouts - but then again when he gets spanked on climate change I can see why he avoids the issue) he must be feeling brave after ducking any scrutiny is his role in the Hager emails. To be precise, I was producing, researching and writing Driver's questions for his current affairs show on Alt Tv and his sharpness during Sunrise's 2008 election coverage came from his 30 minute interviews on Alt, once that fell over he was much less sharp, stopped being an alternative to Paul Henry and viewers left in their droves. Not such a difficult conclusion to draw for anyone other than Farrar.)

Maybe oliver can go work on Thane Kirby's new 'Ponsonby Radio' after losing the PD job at George? Such a demise is proof that there is a god!

I've never liked Oliver Drivers sarkiness . which is why I would turn off sunrise ..

Paul Henry is a little barstard . but he does it in a funny and entertaining way..

Oliver comes across as just full of his own self importance.. Im not sure if its his manner or the scripting done . either way I turn off the TV whenever I see him ..

It is worth noting no one in the media watched this mornings Sunrise and didn't register it had been cancelled until the press release went out, of that fact TV3 should be concerned.

Get your facts straight Bomber. The staff of Sunrise weren't told until after the end of the show. I watched the last 10 minutes of the show this morning and there was no mention made that the show had been cancelled, and they actually promo'd the next day's scheduled lineup as normal.

The loss of Sunrise returns NZTV back to the dark ages, it's as simple as that. Back to being a mushroom, kept in the dark and fed on Bullshit. For me a professional in the TV industry I'm out of her, again, and this time i'm not coming back. What a joke of an industry. Had to leave twenty eight years ago because NZ dissapeared up it's own arse.Looks like its happening all over again. Tiny pond, tiny biz, tiny minds, and no work at all for professionals, just cheap kids out of film school who work for nothing. Great one guys, will the last Sky watching beneficiary please turn out the lights. Shame on this country, shame on the Govt and shame on TVNZ and TV3, what a f'n joke.

Maybe TV3 needs to set up live video feeds looking down on the main streets of New Zealand towns and have commentary from the Auckland studio on what's happening. they could feature one different town vista from around the country each morning on a rotation basis. That would be cheap and give us perspective on what's happening out there in provincial NZ and politics could be kept out of it too.

Or better still, re-runs of TV3 evening news from the beginning every morning with that Canadian woman. Then we can start watching history repeat itself during throughout the course of the day.

I could never stomach watching Sunrise, from the ugly set to the annoying "matey" theme music.

Where in the hell is a decent morning programme with decent news, both TVNZ and TV3 ran with a light news programme in the morning and then crap in between for the reamining twenty minutes.

There is no serious news in the morning on either both stations. It's all bullshit, plus maybe 8 minutes of a news highlight, two minutes of weather and some business round up.

If you are going to do a two hour news slot in the morning then do some serious news.

Otherwise it's two crap news shows that people don't really watch in the morning but since a TV is in every room it's turned on.

If you have kids (parents will be in the 20-35) age group it goes to cartoons. If you are older you go to TV1.

This is why TV3 failed it pitched itself at light news to people between the 20-35 age group that theyhave children.

Guess what the kids rule the remote.

No matter what you left/right slant was you were going to lose.

"Kerry: Paul Henry is NOT offensive! Lighten up champ"

Wrong. He's offensive to bi sexual latte-drinking sushi-eating liberals which is why he is the man.

If you want "proper" news at breakfast, there is plenty of choice: BBC, Aljazeera, National Radio.
If you want TV1/TV3 muppetry instead, don't complain about it, it's your own choice.

Lets have PAUL HENRY, he is just fantastic, and it is a bonus to be able to laugh in the mornings. No one else can take his place.
