Sheep shagging 3 times will get you life in NZ?

Police, judge attack three strikes policy
The Government's new "Three Strikes and Max" crime policy has been criticised by a judge and labelled a political gimmick by the police union.

Wow, when you let ACT dictate policy from the fringes there's a backlash? How woulda thunk it. As the heat goes on this ridiculous 3 strikes nonsense some of the decisions are simply weird - sex with sheep will get you 14 years in prison no parole? Are you kidding?

The 36 offences that will qualify as a strike carry maximum jail terms of between seven years and life. Here the crimes are listed with the maximum jail term if convicted:

Murder, Life

Manslaughter, Life

Sexual violation, 20 years

Attempted murder, 14 years

Sexual connection with consent induced by threat, 14 years

Sexual connection with child, 14 years

Compelling indecent act with animal, 14 years

Wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 14 years

Aggravated wounding, 14 years

Discharging firearm or doing dangerous act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 14 years

Using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, etc, 14 years

Abduction for purposes of marriage or sexual connection, 14 years

Kidnapping, 14 years

Aggravated burglary, 14 years

Aggravated robbery, 14 years

Causing grievous bodily harm with intent to rob or assault with intent to rob in certain circumstances, 14 years

Attempted sexual violation, 10 years

Assault with intent to commit sexual violation, 10 years

Attempted sexual connection with child, 10 years

Doing an indecent act on a child, 10 years

Sexual connection with young person, 10 years

Attempted sexual connection with young person, 10 years

Exploitative sexual connection with person with significant impairment, 10 years

Attempted exploitative sexual connection with person with significant impairment, 10 years

Using a firearm to resist lawful arrest or detention, 10 years

Commission of crime with a firearm, 10 years

Robbery, 10 years

Sexual connection with dependent family member, 7 years

Attempted sexual connection with dependent family member, 7 years

Indecent act on a young person, 7 years

Indecent assault, 7 years

Wounding with intent to injure, 7 years

Aggravated injury, 7 years

Discharging firearm or doing dangerous act with intent to injure, 7 years

Assault with intent to rob, 7 years

14 years no parole for someone who has sex with sheep? Look, I'm not defending sex with animals, I just think 14 years no parole is a wee bit harsh for something that I think we can all agree suggests some mental illness on the part of the sheep shagger, and perhaps that person needs help not 14 years no parole.

Parole is one of the few tools usable inside prison to enable behavioural change. If the prisoner doesn't get into trouble, doesn't break the rules, takes courses and shows redemption, that behaviour is rewarded with the possibility of early release. Withdraw that tool altogether leaves no incentive on the individual to moderate themselves and change, and with dramatically longer sentences now being mandatory implemented our prison population will explode. The prisoners being released after 7 years hard time in 23hour a day double bunked lockdown, run by a private prison (whom numerous overseas examples show us rule with criminal brutality) in environments where no elected politician is directly responsible over, will be more damaged individuals coming out than we sent in.

Bomber - that was put in by the nats...

Its worth noting though, that you'd have to do it, get caught, go to prison, serve your sentance, do it again, get caught, go to prison, serve your sentance, then do it again to get your third strike.

(but you are correct that it shouldn't be in there) - its the only crime in there without a victim.

it's one of the more ridiculous policy but National is full of shit policies done by idiots for idiots.. yet another highly unsuccessful american form of punishment that evidence based research screams is highly unsuccessful.. created with the tag line '3 strikes' because its familiar and people like to mix abit of sport in when they incarcerate other humans for meritricious laws without actually being or consulting experts.. In one state in the u.s 98% of life servers are african american and for non-violent breaches of parole.. so if you get caught with a beer in your hand while on parole, or texting while your driving, your back in for life..
Works really well.. at filling our prisons, rather than looking at drivers of crime and what creates a better, valued society.. but i wouldnt expect anything less from a piece of shit political party fulled with pieces of shit politicians..

All New Zealanders become victims every time another person fucks a sheep.

Sounds good, if uve committed two of those before for sure you should serve the full sentence the third time. its not life, just full sentence.

Something of a discrepancy between the title and the text "life" vs "14 years"

Meh, another day another piece of populist, hardline law passed by a populist government. Makes me sad.

The really fucked part is the 'no parole on your second strike'.

All the lovely benefits of not having the parole incentive, with the added goodness of them being released free from any conditions.

That is if there second strike offense doesn't carry a mandatory life sentence, in which case they stay inside forever.

Think what that list shows is how fuxured our max sentances are for some crimes.

Indecent assault - max 7 years, where as stealing some shit (robbery) 10 years.

I mean fuck I would way rather my loved one be robbed than indecently assaulted.

As for the animal one however. I would think that perhaps this would qualify for the "manifestively unjust" part of it, that and the fact about 1 person per year gets convicted of it. Still fucked up though.

However basing ones argument against this law on this is like basing ones argument against the anti smacking law the same way Family funde christian First is, not really going to happen.

A better argument is that re parole.

Personally re seriously violent crime and rape I have no problem with the law, if you are someone who rapes 3 times I dont want that person on the street. However I do have a problem because it involves lesser crimes, like robbery and other "possession" crimes which are not what people are really that worried about.

Think what the sheep has to go through though... The horror of heading to the Meat Works while their feet are still in the gummies- a dead giveaway to the rest of the brood to what ewe've been up to!
All humour aside, the law is ill conceived and designed for the low brow mentality of the Classist paranoid rat bags without social conscience that it will protect.
Instead of tackling the problem - just throw the problem away or throw a blanket over it so you can't see it.

Sorry, folks. This isn't bestiality; it's compelling an indecent act. That means forcing someone else to commit bestiality. Check your Crimes Act.

Now, debatable whether that one should be on the list. But at least be debating the right crime.
