Eye to Eye a grave loss for current affairs in NZ

Media: No longer seeing Eye to Eye
Willie Jackson claims there is "no room for opinionated Maori" at TVNZ after the state broadcaster scrapped his current affairs show Eye to Eye. "If you want to be a Maori presenter at TVNZ you have to be apolitical but it is a different rule if you are...Paul Holmes or Paul Henry," Jackson said. "I just think rules are different for people like myself and [outspoken former Maori broadcaster] Derek Fox." TVNZ won widespread plaudits for Eye to Eye with Jackson chairing a confrontation between four guests, often with two pairs representing Maori and Pakeha interests. But the state broadcaster has pulled the plug amid funding changes. These meant it had to start contributing cash and ramp the programme up for prime time if it was to attract any public money. Jackson was grateful Eye to Eye had run for six years and said he was not wholly surprised. But he was disappointed about TVNZ's approach. The production company Front Of The Box had been told in an email. After being treated as a valuable talent at TVNZ, Jackson said he had been unable to discuss other work with the broadcaster. "I've tried to talk to [head of news and current affairs Anthony] Flannery, but he stopped answering my phone calls and emails about a year ago."

OUCH! Eye to Eye has been killed off by TVNZ? This isn’t just a loss to Maori content in NZ, it is a massive loss to current affairs in NZ. As far as I am concerned, Willie Jackson is one of the best current affairs hosts in the country, Eye to Eye was always confrontational to the issues in a way the pussy footed rest of the current affairs community never was.

I take Willie’s point on the double standards in NZ media with his Paul Henry example. There seems to be a belief in NZ media that no one is allowed a ‘left wing’ opinion. I remember hosting a talkback show on a radio station some years ago, I had a collection of guests on the show that ranged from Greenpeace to a tenants rights group. I was asked after my show to see the director who said he felt I was ‘too political’ for the stations format, the joke however was that immediately before my show, right wing maniac Lindsey Perigo had hosted a 3 hour interview with Don Brash as his guest, and that wasn’t considered ‘too political’. There is a right wing bias in our NZ media that holds a double standard, former National Party candidate Paul Henry’s crazy right wing diatribes are considered ‘mainstream dialogue’ anything progressively liberal is considered too fringe.

To the amazingly talented people who created one of the best current affairs shows in the country for the last 6 years – kia kaha and many thanks for the thoughtful and challenging insights you brought to the country. The NZ media landscape minus Eye to Eye is a greatly reduced and inferior one and heralds the on going bias towards the right.

Ask Willy about decriminalizing marijuana.
Ask Willy about homosexuality.
Ask Willy about Clint Rickard.

Willy is a Conservative Maori Trade Unionist, not a Liberal, and barely of "the left".

On a brighter note, Russell Brown, and now bomber has a tv show.

The left wing blogs are getting primetime, whilst the right wing blogs are left to their daily blog excretions.

Point taken, I've certainly had him up about those positions as well, but he was a much more aggressive left wing opinion and host on a lot of issues than many in the mainstream media.

On a brighter note, Russell Brown, and now bomber has a tv show.
That is kind, let's not forget Wallace Chapman on Backbenchers, he is doing some great work as well.

TVNZ have gone to the dogs, Willie would be better on the only decent public broadcasting channel in NZ which is Maori TV.
Also if "Eye to Eye" rated well enough TV3 would pick it up, if it didn't rate, then who cares, commercial TV is not a charity & should not be broadcasting a current affairs show that cannot earn it's keep.

Point taken Anon, but Eye to Eye was relegated to 11am on a sunday bloody morning, the grave yard of mainstream media and surely there is a point that as the state broadcaster there is a responsibility to have shows like Eye to Eye on a primetime slot?

To address the imbalance the networks have created by only having left wing types hosting shows, when wide screen television becomes de rigeur (if it is already, i wouldn't know as i still own a black and white PYE) then we shall behold the behemoth which is Cameron Whale Lard Shitter!
I must go now and blind taste some fermented urine samples.

I'm not surprised that Willy feels hard done by. It is hard to understand why TVNZ continues to employ Paul Henry. Maybe they feel that being the only candidate to lose out to a transvestite in a general election nullifies any political bias he has.

Paul Henry is the only presenter with any personality. I only watch Close Up when he is presenting it. Mark Sainsbury is so bland.
But give me a break about the supposed lack of left-wing TV presenters. The 7pm slot is tied up with Mark Sainsbury and John Campbell. How can forget Mark Sainsbury's embarassing fawning over Helen Clark at the last election.
Willie Jackson can do his show on Maori TV - that channel is about as left wing as you can get.

God, wouldn't it be great if we had Willie Jackson instead of Paul Fucktard Henry on Breakfast TV?

They are weirdly parallel. I don't agree with Willie Jackson on everything but at least his opinions have some depth to them.

Sure, he could go to Maori TV but surely the point is that authentic and unadulterated Maori perspectives need to be a part of the mainstream media commentary in this country.

It's all so white bread.

I bet Paul Henry tapes each Breakfast episode so he can race home and watch how ammusing he has been as he insults and denegrates anyone who doesnt agree with his right wing wanker blabberings...

Not a big fan of willies either but would rather listen to him then Henry telling us what he considered wrong in the world.....especially as he giving Key a body rub each week....Gag!!!

"Liberal" media ..we're down to Radio NZ. ..they reatin something like a cynical left-ish view on issues. But of course in this country these days if you're looking at issues from the perspective of the average taxpayer then you're left wing liberal media ..At least RNZ still has a news team that can think, and has a memory extending back beyond the last government.

Thats one billion for two tribes and they aren't even the richest thats the white tribes in the south island.

That alone would exceed the fiscal envelope cap of one billion dollars plus.

Maori are also double-dipping on special benefits and food grants and getting their benefits paid in advance while broke pakeha and the elderly sell stuff on the radio on the morning garage sales to raise the cash for power bills.Winz workers are ringing maori only to offer them additional support on top of treaty payments and luxury hotels etc.Who cares says willie.

Maori make up only 15% of the population, in march they accounted for 23% getting special benefits and 29% with the new special benefit (temporary additional support TAS)30% OF MAIN BENEFIT (MAORI ARE ALSO GETTING CARS REPAIRED AND MORTGAGES PAID ON THE DOLE WHILE PAKEHA CATCH THE BUS AND RENT)of $100.00 a week for a couple for 3 months but can be renewed like the treaty top ups.Maori also accounted for 45% of the 115,000 who received food grants (for boil up and gourmet hungi with wagyu beef and peter gordon from sky city's dine restaurant) in the march quarter and a staggering 47% for advances on their benefit for piss, grog, booze, smoko, roll ups and puha and pakeha (yummy)

@Anonymous. Why does your particular type of racism go hand in hand with being unable to structure a single grammatical sentence?

No surprise really they would axe locally produced content like Eye to Eye (not sure if inhouse) and utter trash like Wheel of Fortune since they can just fill the slots with repeats of Eastenders for minimal cost.
I wonder if the same will happen to Backbenchers (kind of doubt it).
