Paul Henry’s Mo-chismo (the blind leading the deaf)

A lot of righteous criticism has been heaped on Paul and his decision to mock Stephanie Mills on Breakfast last week. Stephanie had been on the show to discuss the death of a French agent who had been involved in the Rainbow Warrior bombing and ended up being mocked by Paul for having facial hair. How base, how ugly, how very NZ, we seemed to have forgotten being under Labour for 9 years that there is a garden variety bigotry that stalks these fair isles, the out of town drunk Uncle who you have to put up with at Christmas once a year with their ‘bloody maaaaaaaaaaaoris get too much’ dinner table speeches is not only alive and doing well, but is currently the Government. The resentment of education is back and Political Correctness book burning is the new fad. The rednecks have been in full bloom on talkback on this facial hair issue (very much in the same vein their sickening attacks on Helen Clark’s UN appointment) that remind us that the view has narrowed with National and ACT in power. The white males who under FPP were never challenged for cultural power have felt that under MMP their cultural power had been rubbed raw, other people get to have a say in the decision making process meaning their voice wasn’t the only one, that really rips the nighties of the Paul Henry’s of this world. That perception and insecurity of a loss of male power has been the driving backlash against ‘political correctness’ and has given our redneck friends the talkback justification to cry about how hard done by they’ve all been for just being blokes. Well sadly that backlash has found political voice and for all the Paul Henry’s out there who have felt alienated at those Christmas dinners, it’s all their dream Christmas dinners come at once – they and their ilk are in power now and the facial hair of a woman is much more important than what that woman has to say. Paul Henry represents more than just Paul Henry, he represents all well to do old white males who feel the same ‘social engineering’ resentments and who now think under their Government being in power that they can go back to the racist jokes and sexist crap with the sly winks and devil may care smirks that give them the self esteem boost their Viagra pills can’t seem to match.

I leave the last word to a much more dignified Stephanie Mills
"It's trademark Paul Henry and there are bigger issues in the world to worry about - like people dying of leukaemia from French [nuclear] testing. I think he likes being controversial - that's a polite way to put it. This is who I am and people make choices about who they are. "I have a really wonderful family, three gorgeous kids, a loving husband, great friends, really challenging job that I do part-time around all the other things I do in my life, and I love my life. "I'm secure with myself and I feel sorry that these people are so insecure about either their own appearance or mine. This is not about me, it's about them."

You know, you could have saved yourself a nonsensical 400 word rant if you just bothered to actually read the part of Stepanie Mills' response - specifically the bit at the start where she says: " there are bigger issues in the world to worry about"

Now, now Anon, no need to lie to try and make your sad little point, I said the tactics used by National to ram through the changes under a misuse of urgenncy were a 'pack rape 'of the select committee process.

Yes , there ARE bigger issues to worry about . That doesn't mean that we can't be outraged by this despicable behaviour from a nasty little man.
Watching the clip above I see Alison Mau doing the 'blonde bint' sidekick routine so beloved by TV stations - her hands held in a prayer like posture , pleading - half heartedly in a little girl voice for him not to read out the emails ...why the hell didn't she stand up and say " if you read those out i'm walking out "
Peter Williams sat snickering and giggling too, actually before this I thought those two weren't too bad .

NUH , i'm sorry , Stephanie Mills is a woman with integrity and a lot of grace too i'd say , but I'm not as charitable as she is .

I think the whole thing was ugly ,nasty, bullying , in paul henry's case it had political overtones ( would he EVER do anything like this to a right wing guest - i KNOW he wouldn't ) and its a fuckin disgrace that it happened on the so called State Broadcaster.

What is also a disgrace is all the misogynist, hillbilly , moronic letters of support for hoorayhenry on the TV One message board

You fell into his trap.

Ignore the shit and let his TV ratings/rantings be made redundant as TVNZ cut the dead wood.

He is generating this out o9f self interest.

Apparently we have a problem with bullying in this country (not suprisingly). Infact, I remember an item on one news not so long ago about a boy who committed sucide becasue he was constantly made fun of for his appearance. To me this IS a big issue, it is about the 'attitude' we have to bullying other people. It may very well be 'politically correct' and I believe in free speech, but if it were Paul Henry's daughter who was the one making the comments or on the recieving end of the comments, I wonder if he would rethink his abnoxious attitude.

Leaving aside Henrys obvious political bias and rabble rousing his comments can best be described as unchivalrous and lacking basic courtesy. What an ass of a 'man'.

The Broadcasting Act 1989 requires broadcasters to maintain programme standards
consistent with:

• the observance of good taste and decency

Which clearly they have not done.
TVNZ has only received half a dozen official complaints.

EVERYONE that would like their national broadcaster to start hiring presenters that focus on intelligent converstion and opinion and politics (rather than facial hair , leaving their girlfriends at the bottom of stairs and crocked teeth) should complain....

(before National sells off our national broadcaster and we have no right of complaint)

Er... perhaps you don't know what you are talking about: TV3 is owned by Canwest and can be subjected to complaints. Hell even Alt TV had complaints against it e.g. the waitangi day incident.

Just because a broardcaster is in private hands doesn't mean they are beyond reproach.

MALE hair ? and yet she's a WOMAN . How very odd - does that mean she'd had a hair transplant - and from a MALE ? why would you do that - most humans have hair - but not usually hair from the opposite sex, how intriguing !

FYI , and because it sounds as if you've not managed to ever get close to a woman ( and blow up dolls don't count ) women have HAIR on their bodies .

YUP..fraid so, sonny .
The real world isn't airbrushed .

It was funny, whats your problem?

sorry but if you're a woman and go around with a mo you have to accept that society will pass comment, and yes wax is cheap and yes laser is cheap about $50 to do a mo. I'm gay and a drag queen and can certainly see the funny side of this...you bunch of buzz kills. I bet you're parites are swinging! or do you have the mind police recording everything people say incase they speak out of line.
