No Maori Flag on Harbour Bridge for Waitangi Day (how’s that ‘mana enhancing’ relationship going?)

Maori flag on bridge call a stunt – Henare
National MP Tau Henare has dismissed Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples' plea to fly the Maori flag above the Harbour Bridge on Waitangi Day as an attempt to court free publicity. Mr Henare said he had little time for the idea, which Dr Sharples plans to ask National ministers to support as a symbol of the new direction the party is taking in its support arrangement with the Maori Party.
The Maori Party joined the mACTional coalition, not because National wanted to wrap itself in camouflage to make it’s hard right Daddy State agenda look moderate, oh no, the Maori Party joined the National Party because it would create a ‘Mana enhancing’ relationship. So in the spirit of that ‘mana enhancing’ relationship one would have thought the beige Obama, John Key, would have leapt at the chance to build that ‘mana enhancing’ relationship especially since John Key forced the Maori Party to vote in tax cuts that help the wealthy, raise truancy fines to $3000, pack rape the select committee process to ram through medieval law and order legislation and force through the right to sack, one would’ve thought that John Key surely would be happy to give the Maori Party some symbolic crumbs after all of that, but apparently not.
The Maori Party is already being told where to sit on the Parliamentary bus by the land of the wrong white crowd brigade of nACTional, how long will they put up with this bullshit?

If Tau Henare thinks it's completely unimportant what flag is flying on the bridge, why not fly the Maori flag? In fact, if it's so unimportant, why not ditch the union jack altogether and only fly the Maori flag? I tell you why that won't happen, because it IS important. It is VERY important. Naku noa na Deirdre
A relation of mine actually hung the maori flag from the bridge one waitangi day.
Got arrested eventually and let off without charge. Made a doco of it and everything. I believe they ran is on maori TV.
Very proud of that boy to be honest. Peaceful protests like that are just awesome.
The flag itself is very controversial. It also does not represent ALL maori tribes. Many do not recognise it. Many maori support it as a sign of protest, without really understanding its origins or how it relates to their people.
The reason why it should never fly is because its not just a 'Maori' flag with which I would have NO problem, its a SEPARATIST Maori flag, which is RACIST in its intent. Fly the old Confederation flag the Maori chiefs signed the Treaty under if you will, but why a divisive flag that wants one aet of rules for diluted Maori and one set for all the other others? We wouldnt fly a white power flag so why should we fly what is effectively a black power flag? Racism only goes one way here in NZ, unbelievable.
Why did the story about getting the Palestinian flag on the harbour bridge go unreported?
"The Maori Party is being told to sit on the bus by the land of the ....."
At least under National, the Maori Party are on the bus. Under Labour they would still be cleaning the bus.
Hine-te-po
Didn't the maori party actually support $3000 truncy and 90 day fire bills? Regardless, I think I agree with anon 9:47 on this one. (although I don't really care)
Bomber, you sir are a racist. White guilt has blinded you to the fact. Oh so quick to jump on the back of a 'whitey', but never seeing the racism inherent in the flag.
um they will be like all maoris and be quite happy as long as they are given their trinkets ie positions of 'power', nice cars. not much has changed since we arrived
Yeah I saw the whole bloody shameful fiasco of the undermining of our Parliamentary Legislature under Urgency by our newly elected Government...really disgusting folks, shamelessly unethical use of veto power by the Government there.
As far as flying a flag in recognition of the presence of Maori as an actor in this State arrangement, I say, sure thing- when we can't get our heads around that I sometimes fear we haven't come far, but we have and I believe we will be fine. If that's a big deal, how are we actually going to behave toward one another as a civil society? (almost a rhetorical question really)
They will solve the problem in the same way they bought land in the 1800's - By giving the Maori leaders beer.
Tau - where’re all your bros now?
