Israel cease-fire in effect: occupation of Gaza

Aren't they well pleased with themselves. Shooting Palestinian fish in an Israeli barrel. Israel fights to gain a cease-fire. Hamas fights to lift the blockade - as a first step. Negotiations have reached the non-killing stage at last.

Haaretz:
Prime Minster Ehud Olmert on Saturday night announced that Israel's security cabinet has voted in favor of a unilateral cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, which went into effect at 2 A.M. local time.
[...]
Olmert said that "if Hamas entirely ends its rocket fire on Israel, Israel will consider an IDF withdrawal from the Gaza Strip." If that did not occur, he said, "The IDF will continue to operate in order to protect our citizens."

If the rockets stop the Israelis will withdraw ground forces, but the terms are unilateral from Israel, not mutual through the Cairo process, so the Israelis (once again holding all the cards and chips in this sorry game) set the agenda all the way through - the issue is will Hamas and other groups continue to launch rockets? That is a poor negotiation wedge really - but one of the few they have. Hamas - and Israel too - want something to come out of Cairo to stabilise the situation - I don't want to use the word "normalise" because that would be to condemn the Gazans to a permanent ghetto existence (Israel's former, current and future preference to solve their Palestinian Question). The cease-fire and lifting the blockade are two separate issues to Israel. Hamas responds:

Hamas said late Saturday that it reserves the right to continue resisting Israel "with all means" if Jerusalem does not follow up its ceasefire with a withdrawal from Gaza and lifting the blockade on the territory, a Hamas official said on Saturday.
[...]
"A unilateral ceasefire does not mean ending the (Israeli) aggression and ending the siege. These constitute acts of war and so this will not mean an end to resistance," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told Reuters in Gaza.

He also criticised Israel for taking a unilateral approach rather than entering into a deal with Egyptian mediators: "It is an attempt to pre-empt the Egyptian efforts and any other efforts that seek to achieve a withdrawal of the occupying forces, an end to the siege and a ceasefire."

Israel said it would cease fire from 2 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Sunday. Six rockets from Gaza hit the city of Be'er Sheva around 11 p.m. on Saturday, shortly after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced the planned ceasefire. No injuries were reported.

Other Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip, which like Hamas have fired rockets on Israel, rejected Israel's ceasefire. Olmert said that after the ceasefire Israeli troops will remain in the territory but end "offensive activity".

Standby to see if the rhetoric is matched with rockets.

Politics can be a dirty business, and is frequently cruel; more to do with power than religion. This hasn't been a war, it's been a massacre.

Hamas will never honor a ceasefire, and as soon as they start firing rockets again, Israel must too.

These people equating Israel with the Nazis have to be insane, and they are mostly from the Left. The Left acting like Nazis and calling for a new Hitler, and for the Jews to go to the ovens, wow! Hitler, someone even most of them would say they hate. The Left, many are anti-semitic Nazis, they should be so proud. The truth is coming out, it is getting harder to hide.

The MSM is insidious, they are instrumental in fanning these flames. We must keep trying to de-brainwash as many people as possible. As the brave Geert Wilders put it recently, "To begin with, there is already a Palestinian state, and that is Jordan. This land covers nearly eighty percent of the historic Palestine. Most residents of Jordan are Palestinians, for instance queen Rania."

Why doesn't Jordan take the poor Palestinians in the West Bank and Egypt control the nut jobs in Gaza?

They don't want them, that's why. They should be made to take them. That may be the only answer.

Hamas is what makes Gaza much worse than it could be. If they would give up the dream of destroying Israel and the Jews and stopped all missiles and suicide bombers, and all terrorist attacks, Israel would welcome doing business with them, and things would be peaceful. But they can't do this as long as they follow their Koran strictly.

There is no negotiating with a mad man, or with Jihadis who want to die to go get their 72 virgins.
I hope Israel doesn't quit too early. If Israel is destroyed, terrorism in the rest of the world will just increase, it will never stop, as long as there are Radical Muslims, or rather, Muslim Fundamentalists; who are appeased, defended, and kissed up to.

That has been the Zionist solution to the Palestinian Question since Balfour hasn't it? Deportation - expulsion. Banished never to return. The Jews get the chunk they want (Israel and Palestine) and the Arabs get everything else - that's the Zionist view.

Israel unilaterally declared a ceasefire yesterday. Of course it quickly vanished when Hamas fired five rockets into Israel. Hamas does not want to cease fire unless it is on their therms. They are concerned about looking defeated in the eyes of the Arab world. In truth, they have been defeated from a military standpoint. The vanishing Israeli cease fire

Putting aside the fact that most left on their own accord at the urging or Arab leaders who were about to attack, what about all the Arab Israeli's living in Israel? I don't see them being deported or expelled.

"The Jews get the chunk they want (Israel and Palestine) and the Arabs get everything else - that's the Zionist view."

You are being either intellectually dishonest or are ill informed.
Palistine took up what is now Gaza, Israel, the West Bank and Jordon.

Last I looked, Israel doesn't occupy Jordon and I don't see any Palestinian "militants" making claims Jordon either.

The Arabs already have most of Palistine

Hamas in Gaza have every right to continue to resist the invader and occupying forces of the IDF.
The UN needs to get some teeth and send in a peace-keeping force to observe Israel and Palestine to insure that a lasting cease fire can be maintained, after Israel fully withdraw from Gaza and open the borders to allow supplies and Medical Assistance to the Civilians scourged by Israel's over-the-top aggressions against them.
Israel needs to acknowledge Hamas as the duly elected Democratic representative of the Palestinian People, and take up dialogue directly with them for a cease fire, and further negotiations for a lasting peace between the 2 countries. Hamas needs to recognize any attempt by Israel to meet them for an honest negotioation for a peaceful solution to this 60+ year borders conflict and the repatriation of Palestinian Refugee's to their rightful lands.
The US, and the other blood thirsty kiniving bastards that stand on the sidelines and turn the tap of bloodshed on and off at their wims need to back the fuck off and butt out of this situation. Israel needs to be left on their own in the region to learn how to sort out their differences with their neighbours peacefully "IF" they plan to be around for the long haul there in the region.
I for one am taking a stand against this absolute bullshit of American, Israeli - et al Hegemony and bullying in this world. I support the protests that have occurred in Kaikouri and Invercargill against Israeli's, and I will continue to confront any Israeli or American Tourists I see on the street here in NZ and ask them to leave this peaceful country - they are not welcome here in my eyes with the actions and attitudes they display against Freedom and Democratic rights! I do not approve of their racist discrimination and Apartheid tactics! It's time we all took a stand against these Pariah's and isolated them from the world community until they can get their Humanitarian act's together! Trade Sanctions and Boycotts need to be strictly endorsed and followed against all country's who are enabling Israel's Grand Theft and Genocide.

To you Israeli sympathizers here on Tumeke - Your crap doesn't cut it here folks! Bomber and Carol and Tim are being far too kind and passive with you lot!! You need to realize that life here is going to get VERY difficult for you if you continue this rubbish of bullying and degrading behaviour against those of us that are speaking out for peace and human rights!!

Further more, I will support any legal actions taken against Israel to investigate and prosecute them if they are proven to have committed War Crimes in their seige of Gaza and it's Citizen's! Enough of this shit!

I don't target you with my blog comments - you anon' are trailer trash.. and not worth the rhetorical energy.
My targeting is personal and physical, so if you meet me up close and personal you'll learn very quickly that I have no patience for your ugly types! I'm not threatening anything - I'm promising you that I won't tolerate your type(s) around me in this country.
Just like the 30 second "Spray and Walkaway" ads - I'm advertising my form of an effective cure for you fuckwits! Isolation - whether by request or force, it's your choice in the matter, and I sincerely hope that my method will quickly catch on with other like minded peace loving people who are horrified by your ilk - and see you gone! So is John Key by virtue of being Jewish. I'd bet the diplomatic protection squad would have something to say on the issue. Since they are armed it could make for a short and amusing confrontation.

Sam, given that most of the protesters against Israel are Arabic/Muslim and NOT NZers it could be said that why don't YOU get out of OUR country.

Oh for the love of god will you boys please stop flirting with each other - this has nothing to do with the dispicable loss of life caused by Israel, let's re-focus on the actual issue at hand, the reason so many anonymous posters want to focus on Sam is because they want to keep the debate as far away from the war crimes Israel committed in this dirty little invasion. Let's drop the threats and stick to the issue.

Israel made a unilateral cease-fire! Whoopy Doo! Israel started the whole carnage. What I am perplexed about is that our media bought the entire propaganda of Israel. The latest: A Major, a spokesman for the Israeli Army, has asserted that only 400 people in Gaza were killed and all 400 were Hamas! Their wholesale targeting of civilians trapped in Gaza probably has no precedent in recent history. To assert that they killed only Hamas, which I must say, were legitimate electorates because they were democratically elected by Palestinians, is to stretch the bounds of credibility. I only wish that Hamas would stop with its paltry and useless bombing of Israel and capitalize on the world's benefice that it has gained. Hamas has the world to gain and nothing to lose!
