Goldsmith a pogrom too far?

Plan to rid inner city of transients and beggars infuriates left-wing councilors
The Auckland City Council is looking at introducing a bylaw to force homeless people off Queen St and other central-city streets. The bylaw will address loitering, sleeping in doorways and begging by 90 or so homeless people who live rough within a 3km radius of the Sky Tower. Citizens & Ratepayers councillors voted at yesterday's community services committee meeting to spend $50,000 on developing the bylaw to manage homeless issues. The prospect of the bylaw infuriated City Vision-Labour councillors, who accused C&R of creating a "right-wing version of nanny state" to punish and alienate homeless people. And in a rare public disagreement with C&R, Mayor John Banks later questioned the value of a bylaw and called first for a united approach between Government agencies, the voluntary sector and others to deal with the complex social issues. The police and City Missioner Diane Robertson have also raised questions about the bylaw, which is being driven by C&R councillor and community services chairman Paul Goldsmith.
City Visions haven’t read the memo, the left wing version of the Nanny State is called the DADDY STATE, (we can’t build National disgust if we don’t all use the same terminology) but don’t you love how this article is only about left-wing councilors having a problem when even John Banks has murmured that he doesn’t really like it. Goldsmith pulled this stunt last year and he’s obviously decided with a Government change he’ll be able to lead a pogrom against the poor and homeless in central Auckland. Is forcing homeless people off the street really what NZers are about, I’m sure it can’t be just ‘lefties’ who find Goldsmith repugnant.

No, it's poor, frail abandoned sick people blocking the footpath I find repugnant. Don't we have legions of so called social workers to help these people ?

Yes.

Yes, only left-wingers complain. Decent NZers agree with Goldsmith.
The poor will always be with us. Thankfully Mr Goldsmith won't.
Just send homeless to detention camps so they can receive Special Treatment.
How they justify the $50,000 spend whilst talking of slashing the budget is beyond me.
It would be much more productive for the Council to step up its partnership with the likes of the City Mission to provide shelter for the homeless. By banishing them from the inner city, the problem just gets moved somewhere else.
The bottom line is that it's probably safer and easier for the homeless to live in the inner city with access to foot traffic from whom they can ask for money, plenty of rubbish to sift through for basic needs and good amounts of people... high volumes of people provide safety in that someone is less likely to be beaten up or killed when there are possible onlookers.
Pushing them out of the city center rather than providing shelter could make life more dangerous and harder for them.
All comments above are SHITE.
Bomber, rather than "going off on one" as per usual how about offering a considered opinion as to what should be done. Hell, even an ill considered opinion would be a nice change.
Personally I would like to see the vagrants stopped from sleeping in piss stinking shop doorways. And not because I don't want to look at them. But because it is just wrong. Helping these people into more dignified and humane accommodation should be a priority.
BECAUSE IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

Barnsley are you flirting with me? All this pent up passion is difficult to take, we hardly know eachother, I’ve got a girlfriend, I think of you as a brother etc etc etc. You’ve heard them all before, btw while I appreciate you’ve clicked that the V mask was a left wing Toanga misappropriated by your good self, it gave you some charm, the latest picture seems more 40 year old virgin.

Okay, you’re trying so I will to, look I live in the central city, the exact part of Auckland Goldsmith is targeting, I’m a local, this is my hood, I pass Auckland Centrals homeless every day of the week. Whenever I have coins I’ll hand them over without request. They are pretty broken people, lost and hurt and who are utterly harmless. Spending $50 000 on a taskforce to hide the broken side of our society rather than give that money to organizations like the City Mission who have actual plans to reach out to these people is so revolting it’s difficult to make a response that doesn’t repeatedly use the word fuckwit in it.
Bomber, rest easy. I don't like Ink and I don't like hair or piercings. Plus I prefer girls.. Oh, and I am not into chubbies either.
My pic is captain Black. He is a mysteron don't ya know.
City Mission are an honorable and much loved group in auckland, I have attended on xmas day three times (as a server not an eater). But yet we still have people living rough.
I don't give a shit if they are in Queen street or Kaikohe, something should be done.
Closing the big old victorian era mental asylums was about cost cutting and humane treatment of inmates.. They have cut the costs and they are not getting raped by "nurses" anymore but I would suggest that sleeping in a piss stinking doorway is not very humane.
Look past your john banks gives me an angry hard on problem and suggest ways to fix it..

Obvious, very obvious Bill, it lacked all the zest of my opening line which sparkled and crackled with wit, yours was more suburban. Try thinking outside the square, more lateral than literal and you'll be trading barbs with the best of them in no time at all champ.

Well I must commend you on that, I've run the odd toy drive for them as well - civic duty is something to be respected.

And I agree mate, I live here with it, but the solution is better facilities and homing options, passing law to kick them out and spend $50 000 for the privilege is way outta line and you know it.

Yes I've often thought there was a perverse irony calling it Community Care when the Community didn’t in fact Care.

This is just confused Bill, I actually mentioned that even John Banks didn't like this idea and found it a bit distasteful. The solution is staring them in the eyes, give the City Mission the required consents to start building their hostels and work on better funded outreach groups. Banning them and having the cops heavy hand the homeless out of sight is NOT a solution Bill, it's the absolute opposite of a solution, and dammit, it's not the NZ way!
Changing my profile pic dammit.
And I am not urban, I am lifestyle block rural. 15 years of a corner office on the 15th floor of the national bank centre forced me from city living.
Other than that I agree, apart from your assumed assertion that the council should pay to home these lost souls.
How the hell did they let you take part in the annual toy drive on a vespa? I thought proper motorbikes were mandatory to take part.
Barnsley, the council has already decided it will spend money on the issue, if they're going to spend it, they might as well use it in a way that will actually help.
I agree hostels are the answer. Hostels as in the movie 'Hostel' that is.
The homeless would disappear pretty quickly.
Bomber, Banks said that the homeless were citizens of Auckland as well and that no one should be removed for the rugby world cup to make the city beautiful for tourists. He was fully sympathetic with their plight as he himself was once homeless.
This is a lot more that murmuring.
I suppose this is more spin from Tumeke, leave out the facts because the opposite side is a right wing thus enabling you denigate them without having to disclose pesky little inconvenient truths.
kinda like you and climate change really.

Hey clown - I said that Banks had spoken against this, I point that out to show out of line Goldmsith is so much so that even an old bigot like banks can't stomach it. For you to twist that into some weird thing to make a point about climate change says much more about you than me, no wonder you posted anonymously.
No bomber you said murmured not supported I said and he said more than not just liking it.
The weird thing is even when you are caught blatantly lying you STILL try to spin it despite your lie being there in plain fucking text.
Oh for the love of god calm down princess - yes I wrote murmured, I was designating a royalty to Banks that he seems to have taken aboard in his new statesman role he seems to be playing - your absolute effort to put meaning to my words that were not meant by me the writer suggests some deep unresolved issues on your part. Chin up champ I'm sure you'll get a chance to spout off at me at some other imagined point you create.
