The Edge of Jihadism on Sunrise?

The editor of the corporate far right NBR, Nevil Gibson, just said on Sunrise that he considers the protest groups in NZ in the same category as Jihadists and this is why the Police need to spy on them.

Cue open mouthed shock look now – Nevil believes that Greenpeace, Save Happy Valley and SAFE are on par with Jihadists????

What? He’s kidding right? But no, he reaffirmed his position to a fairly shocked Driver several times, is this what the corporate far right really believes? Seeing as they now have the ear of the Government this does not bode well for intelligent debate on any issue.

But they are?

Jihadists cause as much fiscal harm as the peaceniks. One from global backwash, the other from small local action.

Both are not worth the police's time.

The one group that HAS caused real harm nationally is Tony Friedlander's Transport Forum.

Earlier this year they blockaded major roads in all large cities ind towns for hours, preventing tens of thousands of people from going about their lawful business.

They arguably did more damage - by a long way - to NZ's economy than any handful of greenies ripping up GE plants in a paddock somewhere.

Did Coleman mention them? Did the police spy on them?

Anyone with half a brain knows this is patently ridiculous. Oh wait....

Hmmm should I believe Bomber has fairly represented the views of Mr Coleman... possibly, it's not all that far fetched, the man is a douche. However with no transcript or quote I'm inclined to think Bomber is hiding some context here.

How about it Bomber, you gonna back it up?

Oh and:
"is this what the corporate far right really believes?"

pfffffffffffft that's an absurd stretch and you know it. (cue protests from Anon of "but he made an absurd stretch first waaaah!")

Lance I back it up 100% - honestly Barry was very clear he put these people in the same box as Jihadists, he was the one who used Jihadists and Driver was dumb struck.

Lance you have to admit that Barry represents the corporate far right - how much of a stretch is that?

I saw something equally shocking on Breakfast at the start of the week, a historian named Graeme Hunt told NZ that the police action was okay because historically the police have done it many times, and also because "most NZers dont share their views, so the police have a duty to investigate them" Psycho!

The irony is that I bet these groups are all more than happy to be completely transparent and wouldn't mind police monitoring

Illegal activity versus illegal activity. The scale of the activity is irrelevant to the category of the activity. Actually, I'm kind of wondering why long established and respected protest groups don't slam the door shut on spying and secrecy by offering to work with police to weed disruptive criminal elements from their ranks.

"SO that clown believes that people who want to save whales and chickens are just like the Jihadis? Unbelieveable." You sure? they both see their objective as the holy/morally right thing, they're both unwavering in this belief, and they're both willing to take matters into their own hands and possibly outside the law. Just like with religion, the names of the almighty change but the mindset of unquestioning belief stays the same.

"I see from the above post that the National Party are putting their policies for us to see!"
LOL ...you sir, deserve a cookie.

The groups being spied upon are not fundamentalists, they don't have unquestioning beliefs. They have spent a lot of time questioning and have identified questionable areas of our society that need changing - areas which a few rich and powerful people profit from (at the expense of poorer people, animals and the environment) and would like to have their ability to continue their questionable practices left unquestioned.

Let's not forget that animal rights activists in the UK have a history of conducting terrorism through bombing, threatening the children of scientists and arson.

Personally, I glad that the police are keeping an eye on groups like these.

I'd say he's fairly accurate. Video link: http://www.scoop.co.nz/multimedia/tv/politics/16787.html
