Obama presidential victory speech: You Tube
3:53 Obama begins his speech to the masses in Chicago Great rhetorical moments, if a bit too studied. It is precisely what the American electorate wanted to hear. "Arc of history"... change has come to America."
5:35 Obama completes his speech. He really hits his stride. "This is the time.""Yes we can" - the masses repeat it back in a call and response. I can't remember any Presidential victor doing that before - then again there was never a black one before today either.
From the coverage thus far on TV it appears that the American public are thankful that their country now has a chance to redeem itself in the world after the ideological blunders and warmongering of the Bush administration. They have turned a new leaf as a multi-ethnic society - at least it feels that way from this distance. Even McCain acknowledged that black Americans, African Americans, are entitled to feel proud of Obama's win. It is the white Americans, European Americans, who should feel proud of themselves too. Healing a wound is too much of a metaphor, but maybe helping the scars of the past to fade is closer to the mark. Today seems full of possibility. His tour of Africa will be Kennedy times a million.
[UPDATE: 7:45PM NZDT: To celebrate that a black guy called Barack Hussein Obama has just been elected President of the United States by about a three million majority in the popular vote, (it won't sink in till later), I've put up the scrolling masthead banner I made many months ago to support his candidacy when he was starting that struggle with Clinton in the primaries. It was down to the wire and a narrow victory. I had to go a bit negative with him looking suspiciously at Hillary to start with - because that was the enemy and the crux of the "change" issue - and besides, it's a great image. The rest of it is inspirational, as his campaign and victory has been. Click the banner to go to Obama HQ.]
[UPDATE: 10:00PM NZDT: It looks like Obama's popular vote majority will be over 6 million.]

Longtime readers at tumeke should acknowledge Karlos who called Obama for President TWO YEARS AGO.
Whatever happened to little Karlos?
It was moving to hear Obama's victory speech, uplifting to see this historic moment, great to see the end of Bush Jr and his neocons and hopefully this will mean some changes in the US and its government.
However, I don't see a lot of evidence for the claim in the banner above, that Obama and his supporters will "take the government back", with an implication that this will be taken back from an elite that includes the Clintons.
Obama has a lot of ex-Bill Clinton economic advisers, including Paul Volcker who was one of the key people that lead the introduction of neoliberal economic policies in the US in the late 70s-early 80s.
So I expect some changes for the better, but not a great deal of change to the system. Tho I would love to be proved wrong.

"Obama has a lot of ex-Bill Clinton economic advisers, including Paul Volcker who was one of the key people that lead the introduction of neoliberal economic policies in the US in the late 70s-early 80s."
You mean the Volcker who crush the stagflation of the 1970s and paved the way to the 80 boom?
Which is about 52%.
I wonder why you didn't want to quote the percentage?
Luckily for you tim we're here to provide it.
