Mumbai rocked by deadly attacks

Mumbai rocked by deadly attacks
Gunmen have carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 80 people and injuring 250 more. At least seven high-profile locations were hit in India's financial capital, including two luxury hotels where hostages are reported to be held. A fire has destroyed part of the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai's most famous hotel, which is now ringed by troops. Police said four suspected terrorists have been killed and nine arrested.

I think perhaps the rapid destabilization of Pakistan is starting to leach Muslim extremism within India, how India responds to this will be crucial as to whether Pakistan and India will start a new round of saber rattling that could quickly escalate.

Muslim and Hindu extremism alike have existed in India for a long time.

Yes, absolutley, there is a long history of cultural friction but the targeting of Western Hotels in a co-ordinated manner like this suggests a new chapter, I'm suggesting that Pakistan's instability could have a very large effect on India.

yup, and thats why it wont be long before the US go into Pakistan as the emphasis of their military moves from Iraq and back to Afghanistan.

True, valid point.

If the US goes into Pakistan or Iran it will be their absolute downfall. They can't win in Afghanistan as it is, let alone with the increased level of resistance that would accompany another invasion of a muslim country. On top of that, neither their economy nor society would be able to cope with another war.

I disagree. Firstly the US arent about to go into Iran, but this isnt the subject at hand.

Lets make the assumption that Muslims of Pakistani origin were behind this attack. India will respond, maybe not by using direct force, but they will have to do something about the increasing destabalisation of Pakistan (a nuclear armed country). The Americans seem to be acting more and more, the attack on the Pakistani house in the north west frontier is evidence of that.

Although, as an aside, the Pakistanis dont control this region - its lawlessness.

What you will see therefore is pressure from both sides on Pakistan.

Noting the support for the Taliban coming from Pakistan, do you think the US (and I include Barack in this) is just going to sit there and watch Pakistan be totallly run over by extremists?
