Bloke of the week: Alex Kozinski

He's a Reagan-appointed conservative and he likes his internet - a lot. You be the judge, is this guy just too much:

A closely watched obscenity trial in Los Angeles federal court was suspended Wednesday after the judge acknowledged maintaining his own publicly accessible website featuring sexually explicit photos and videos
Videos like what?
a photo of naked women on all fours painted to look like cows
so?
and a video of a half-dressed man cavorting with a sexually aroused farm animal.
Mmmmm, a bit provincial, a bit niche... that's a picture of him there, by the way - doing something to the chickens.
He defended some of the adult content as "funny"
Which it was, like Benny Hill if it was set on a farm and people didn't have any clothes. Everyone does it - ask his mates.
a New York University law professor who specializes in legal ethics and has known Kozinski for years, called him "a treasure of the federal judiciary."
See, he's a treasure, and he's always been keen to stick up for laughs at the office - always, that's The Koz, mate, that's just The Koz doing what he does.
after learning that appeals court administrators had placed filters on computers that denied access to pornography and other materials, Kozinski led a successful effort to have the filters removed.
And God bless him! Porn is up there with Apple Pie and let's not pretend that ain't true.
"I think it's odd and interesting. It's part of life."
You know it, man. You know it.
The sexually explicit material on the site was extensive, including images of masturbation, public sex and contortionist sex. There was a slide show striptease featuring a transsexual, and a folder that contained a series of photos of women's crotches in snug-fitting clothing or underwear.
It shows a healthy variety of interests that span the different sexual and gender communities, and that he appreciates a wide array of artistic genre, and anyway...
"People send me stuff like this all the time," he said.
and then...?
In turn, he said, he occasionally passes on items he finds interesting or funny to others.
like jurors, witnesses, attorneys... or colleagues which is good, communication and levity in the stuffy corridors of justice, nothing wrong with that, as long as no-one in the media gets hold of it and twists it and graphically describes it. Because then it might sound... slightly dodgy.
Among the sexually explicit material on his site that he defended as humorous were two photos. In one, a young man is bent over in a chair and performing fellatio on himself. In the other, two women are sitting in what appears to be a cafe with their skirts hiked up to reveal their pubic hair and genitalia. Behind them is a sign reading "Bush for President."
"That is a funny joke," Kozinski said.
The judge said he planned to delete some of the most objectionable material from his site, including the photo depicting women as cows, which he said was "degrading . . . and just gross." He also said he planned to get rid of a graphic step-by-step pictorial in which a woman is seen shaving her pubic hair.

But that was the best one! Don't pike on us, man.
That's "the Koz" (left). He reminds me a lot of this guy actually, uncle Vito:

Judge in porn trial had obscene website

Alex Kozinski is a senior judge who has always revelled in his maverick reputation. As chief judge on the US 9th circuit court of appeals in San Francisco he has led the nation in challenging the limits of free speech, while his legal opinions are known for their eloquent, witty style.

But this week it was his personal predilections, rather than his juridical prowess, that was on display. A high-profile pornography trial Kozinski was presiding over in Los Angeles was postponed when it emerged that the judge had his own personal collection of obscene images, available for anyone to see, on his family website, alex.kozinski.com.

The material included a photograph of women on all fours, painted as cows, a man cavorting with a sexually aroused farm animal, and images of masturbation and contortionist sex.

Confronted about the images, Kozinski closed the website, gave differing accounts of how the material came to be there, and postponed the trial of Ira Isaacs, a filmmaker charged with distributing videos of bestiality and extreme fetishes. The trial will remain closed until lawyers have had time to explore what the prosecution termed, "a potential conflict of interest concerning the court having a ... sexually explicit website with similar material to what is on trial here".

Kozinsky reportedly initially told the Los Angeles Times that he was responsible for the images on the website, although he said he could not remember some of them. He later said that his adult son, Yale, was responsible for at least some of the content. In an email to a legal gossip website, Kozinski wrote: "I assumed I must have put it there by accident, but when the story broke, Yale called and said he's pretty sure he uploaded a bunch of it."

In comments on Wednesday, Kozinski insisted that the website was intended as a family file-sharing site, and that he had not been aware that it was publicly accessible. He also defended some of the images as humorous.

"Is it prurient? I don't know what to tell you," he said. "I think it's odd and interesting. It's part of life." He defended an image of two women exposing their crotches in a café before a sign reading "Bush for president", saying "That is a funny joke."

"There is a ton of stuff on there," Kozinski told the New York Times. "It's not a porn site. There's some funny stuff."

The site also included music files, family photos and excerpts from the judge's writings.

His son said that he was responsible for maintaining the site and had made a mistake in configuring it for access beyond his family and friends. "I guess I should be more careful about access and all," Yale said. "I didn't put anything on there I think would be embarrassing."
