Cult Schools grow in NZ

Exclusive Brethren schools treble rolls
A network of Exclusive Brethren private schools has more than trebled its roll from 476 to 1555 in five years. Figures released to The Press reveal the reclusive sect's burgeoning school roll will see it benefit from more than $2 million of government funding this year, despite having "an enormous amount of money". The usually media shy Brethren has gone on the front foot over its Westmount schools, declaring them superior institutions.

How can a sexist, anti technology religious cult group have their own schools? Under national these cancerous cult re-education religious schools will get MORE public funding – I think we have to step on the back of the neck of this type of tripe – religion can be taught in school alongside a national curriculum, not a selective curriculum that is taught within a sphere of religion, that’s too fundy and nothing good comes from this brainwashing. It is state sanctioned abuse, and our Political Parties, especially the God squad in National should not pander to these corrosive elements.

I agree. Catholic Schools should come under the same umbrella and be abolished.

Nice dog whistle Bomber. Way off this time though.
All private schools have to follow a ministry of education approved curriculum. The govt funds every child in the country for an education. This amount is supposed to be the same for every child irrespective of where they are attending school. In the case of children who are not in the public system the funding from the govt is substantially less. This is because labour have not increased funding to privately educated kids alongside the public kids.
So not only are private kids paying they are saving the govt a shedload of cash by opting out of the public system.
The brethren schools are called westmount and the reason for the huge jump in numbers is that they have only just built them.
I am troubled by the medias demonisation of these people. They bother no one and are great to do business with. The fact that they have taken their sprogs out of our NCEA paradise is a net benefit for the govt.
Disclosure. I am atheist and all my kids have gone through or are in the public system.

I think the bible should be thrown down the sewer myself but you can't stop people believing in bullshit and these schools do still have to follow the NZ curriculum. Catholic schools aren't too bad, there's a lot of religious dogma taught alongside the curriculum but they recieve a very decent education. I'm not so sure about the Exclusive Brethren but they will be subject to regular reviews like every other school in NZ.

I get more worried about these fundamentalist christians who home school their kids and don't give them any opportunity to develop as a normal child. These kids are indoctrinated into their parents religion and their education is severly substandard.

Got to disagree with you there: For one they are shockers for intellectual property theft and blatantly copying other companies designs and ideas.

I have loads more stories about how mob like they are in business.

Religious & private schools should be abolished and all schools forced to have a decile rating of five, which is the average decile rating of the New Zealand population. If that means some kids from Otara have to be bussed to Remuera to rub shoulders with some SUV mum's little darlings, so be it. Education is about ensuring that at least in opportunity a meritocracy exists. Schools are not place where the middle class should be allowed to try and secure an unfair life advantage for their children or where values antiethical to a secular state are taught.

I know several companies that would strongly disagree with that sentiment.

helengrad, would you do the same with the beloved Koran? Or in your case, with McDonald's menu?

What is with the picture of the burning cross? Are you trying to suggest that the exclusive brethrens are some how connected with the KKK?

Or that realigious schools promote racism?

This vague use of a very powerful and emotive symbol for your story which it has no obvious connection to is either very sophisticated or excruciatingly dumb.

Religion does have a very special place in the lives of a lot of people (der, obviously!) but I agree with my parents who brought me up to be open to other people's beliefs without forcing me to take on their own. I think religion definitely has its place in this world, but should be kept out of schools if it means that the kids attending those schools don't get the opportunity to experience other religions or to lead 'normal' lives like their neighbours or whoever (which is the way of the Brethrens, keep the kids isolated).

Personally I'm agnostic, Mother Nature is as close as I get to believing in God :-)

In a way yes, but this governemnt bailed a whole load of catholic schools out of financial trouble. It was a pragmatic decision to keep the burden of a big influx of students off the public system.
I personally think the government shouldn't have.

Home schooling, tax exemptions and other exception from laws for 'religious' groups, 'religious' groups running social services ....

All supported, encouraged and paid for by government.

It all has to stop but people are to scared, there is this nonsense that 'religion' has to be 'respected'. How about respecting reality and science, I mean real science not ‘Maori’ science by the way.

You can not ban superstition but you make take government support away from it, if people insist on bringing their children up in the dark ages you can’t stop them any more than you can ban papers from publishing star sign columns, but you make it a private out of hours thing and give all children access to real education during legal school hours.

Has the coward Helen had the guts and honesty to get rid of the ‘prayer’ opening parliament yet – what does she do during the prayer, what about getting rid of ‘god’ Defend NZ, does Helen take part in religious/spiritual nonsense at Maori events – yes she does because she is a liar and hypocrite.

Participate in the age in which you live ‘ this is the 21st century you morons.

Religious/spiritual observance is creping in everywhere and people are to scared of the repercussion to stand up against it, Northland Polytechnic used to open all classes with a ‘prayer’ if there was a Maori male in the class they were always invited to be the one to say it, I objected at a class once and to give credit to the Maori male who had been invited to say a prayer for us he quickly passed on the initiation, if he had insisted his wish would have been given preference.

A lot of government ‘education’ courses run by outside organisations are in fact religions groups who recruit all their staff via theory own member or through ads in the religious press.

Brian Tamiki does not pay tax and gets huge amount of government money to run ‘education’ classes. Why blame the Nationals, your biggest hypocrite and provider of money and support to religion is Helen.

Mind you being flown around the world on taxpayers money to remove 'spirits' from government building sure is nice 'work' if you can get it.

All jails have at least one religious preacher on the pay-role, (they are on about $80k a year I think) there is no secular equivalent for the non-religious or inmates.

Whether you like it or not if you are a NZ taxpayer you are funding a hell of a lot of relgion and spirits.

Praise Helen and god defend NZ.

Just thought isn't Bomber a committee talker for World Vision - a relgious organisation.

They kids are forced to leave 'school' young, marry and breed as soon as possilbe.

Having said that the only difference between brethern, scientology, catholics, muslims , star signs, flat earth society, maori stories and spirits, alien abductions ..... is some have been around longer and some have marketed themselves better, they are all lies and crap.

To separate them is a fatal (and simple minded) error, lies are lies and delusion is delusion no matter how they are packaged.

barnsley bill said "All private schools have to follow a ministry of education approved curriculum "

I think that would be better said as All private schools are supposed to follow a ministry of education approved curriculum .

I think if people really knew enough about these schools they might be quite surprised .What is supposed to happen and what actually happens can be two differnt things .For instance is sex education supplied do people really believe that these children are told about things such as condoms or the pill ? .No doubt most people just simply believe this happens because it is meant to be happening .Or do you all really believe certain science lessons are taught ? like evolution for instance ?? .

Of coarse they are right because it is meant to be , but hold on these people are allowed to choose their own teachers ! that are pre grilled ....Christian ones biased by any chance ??
In these types of controling cults where there can be very grave trouble come their way should they step out of line .If sexual abuse is happening can we be sure these things can be talked about ? The child will speak to the teacher right ? a hand picked one most likely as fundy as pos and if not one that has had to sign certain privacy agreements or one that needs the job .Gonna happen ? these kids are safe ?? .

Bill says In the case of children who are not in the public system the funding from the govt is substantially less.

Now that depends very much on what country we are talking about maybe in NZ this is supposed to be the case , but in ozzy and the uk i think you will find this is quite wrong and lets face it these groups are all linked .And thinking about certain happenings how truthfully honest do people really believe these people really are ?? .If you are saying "totally" im just going to say pull the other leg its made of rubber .

Oh yes people will say "oh they shake my hand and a deal is a deal" or i have found them to be wonderful (personally!!)

But lets face it these folk are by no ways stupid ! they know a good deal when they see one specially if it involves money and they are going to do well out of the deal .And for how long have they managed to split familys and even cause suicides , whilst still keeping a public image of just being wonderful lovely christians that never hurt anyone !! .

I am amazed that many folks are so gullable and blind .But then money or religious respect or the fact that certain crooks have a rather polished ablity to pull the wool over many peoples eyes , definatly has alot to do with it .Do you think that could be possible ?

By the way you lovely folks are helping to supply a tax exemption for their (public) places of worship .Been along to see if you money has been well spent ! lately??.Dont (expect) to be able to make use of your kind donation !

L.o.L !!!!

One reason there are some people who are very wary to say anything bad regarding groups such as the Exclusive Brethren ,is because some people are religious or christian supposidly themselves .
It is a bit of a worry is`nt it for these lovely folks ,cause they are very protective of the long held special rights of religious freedom and what they might believe. Something they do not wish to change any time in the near future or hopefully never if they can do anything to make sure of it .
And should these cults get looked into . Holy heck ! mother mary ! ,might it be that this could lead to discisions been made that maybe other religious practices might get a little scrutiny as well ?? .Could it then be found that certain aspects of their own ways of life and beliefs might actually be found (even if to a somewhat lessor degree) to be actually abusive .Maybe some teachings could be found out to be psycologically damaging kids as well .

Enough to make the fundys shudder and turn a blind eye to claims of split familys and suicide etc , as in silence they embrace in a group huddle strumming each others bow no matter whether the instrument is out of tune or not .

Nothing changes .Religious freedom is exactly that totally free to do as they please , even though they continue to campaign to regulate many things others do .

What a great system huh !? the untouchables !! . Tumeke !!
