The Green Party yesterday joined calls for the use of pepper-spray to be reviewed, despite findings that show the man who died after being sprayed on Tuesday had a pre-existing medical condition and suffered a heart attack. Henry Bailey, who also has a history of mental health issues, died at his Mangere home moments after being pepper-sprayed by police who had been called there about an assault. A post-mortem examination showed the 42-year-old died of a heart attack, but police are still awaiting toxicology results. Head of the investigation, Detective Superintendent Andy Lovelock, said Mr Bailey had a pre-existing heart condition which made him susceptible to suffering a heart attack at any time, particularly when in a heightened emotional state.

R-I-G-H-T, I love the way the Detective is creating a narrative that Mr Bailey had some type of pre-exiting heart condition that would make him susceptible to a heart attack at the drop of a hat ”at ANY time”, it had NOTHING to do with being pepper sprayed in the face and battened, oh no, Mr Bailey was a gonna from I.H.A.S (Immediate Heart Attack Syndrome) and the small matter of being pepper sprayed and battened was merely an incident that caused Mr Bailey a heightened emotional state, as if being pepper sprayed and battened was akin to a humble rollercoaster ride. Add to the fact that Mr Bailey was a mental health patient and is now the fourth pepper sprayed mental health patient to have died. Two official reports assure us it was the ‘excitability’ of pepper spraying and pre-existing heart conditions, but fails to acknowledge that a lot of mental health patients on medication have the same symptoms and that perhaps pepper spraying mental health patients might be a bad idea, just as the Green Party predicted, (like they predicted with the TSA).

An investigator from the Independent Police Conduct Authority is looking into the actions of the police officers involved.

Hahaha, it makes it sound like the cop who has been appointed to look into this death is independent doesn’t it, an investigator from the independent Police Complaints Authority – when of course it should read, cop investigates cop under the guise of independence – which is part of the problem as to why Police know they can get away with pepper spray because there is no independent body whom watches over them to make sure they don’t overstep the mark.

Here’s what I think is the problem, ever since we lowered the physical and fitness restrictions for the Police, we have a new breed of smaller, weaker cops who aren’t as physically sure of themselves in a confrontation, big cops have the self-assured calm quality of, ‘Hit me son and I’ll take half your head off’, and because of our woeful ’19-weeks-and-you’re-a-cop’ training we don’t have cops who can talk situations down and calm people down, instead we have ill trained kid cops who are physically less sure of themselves who go immediately for the taser or pepper spray when spooked or challenged.

I do wonder though how many pepper sprayed mental health patients need to die before the Police admit there is a problem and don’t pin it on bullshit ‘Immediate Heart Attack Syndromes’, what are we talking 10 deaths before they decide it isn’t a good idea? 20 deaths? Just give me a round figure under 50 perhaps?
