10 dead - but it's a 'blip'
The rash of violent crime that has cast a dark cloud over the new year masks a relatively steady rate of murder in New Zealand, according to long-term police figures. Experts have blamed "mad January" for the 10 murders since the start of the year - with the finger being pointed at everything from Christmas stress to alcohol to a full moon. That figure is up from seven in January last year and four the previous year - and is more than double the monthly average for the whole of 2006, according to Statistics New Zealand. The last time there were 10 murders in one month was October 2005. Prime Minister Helen Clark and National leader John Key have concentrated on youth issues in their opening speeches of election year. But figures for the past decade suggest the January rate of murder is unlikely to continue.
Let’s also add to this the fact that the News media have nothing else to report on (most aren’t back till March darling, still in Bali) and whipping up the public with the kids-are-evil war dance helps prop up slow summer TV ratings. The solutions to youth offending takes time but there are programs that work and can work, but violence has been here in NZ a lot longer than just last month and the knee jerk reaction by both political parties when the stats show us Youth Offending is on the decline is short sighted in the extreme, do we really want paramilitary bootcamps as a solution to a problem that has been ill defined in the first place?

I remember growing up in a country when one murder a year was a really big deal. Now ten a month is standard? It's sad to see New Zealand has become such a violent and unhappy place.

Why do you do you try and frame this as "the kids are evil"?
It's kids who are the victims in most of these cases.
Judge Becroft has pointed out that while statistically there has been a slight decrease in offenders, there offences have been more severe.

It's the media who are whipping this into a kids-are-evil war dance, not me and what did the military say to that report anon? John Key knows what they said, they said 'no thanks', he was on Breakfast on Tuesday saying he would force the military to do it.
Annette King blames the weather and the full moon, TJ, because it would be very racist to say that Maori and Polynesians have a predilection for violent savageries. Remember in NZ it is more important to be PC than it is to tell the truth.
Good on the army! why should the army have to listen the government of day? They should be able do what ever they want! I mean our army is very busy fighting lots and lots of wars at the moment....

TRUTH Mike, shit I dont think you would regconise what TRUTH is you fell over it, Govt brought in slave labour with the Islanders in the 80's, too shay, they should have kids that become citizen here, the same children that remember the get out FOBB dance, as they tried to restore that little white utopia to dream of. As for Maori, I dont think youre up with the play to be talking about Maori, they are only doing what youre forefathers taught them, hatered runs deep down that line, maybe the past needs to be sorted before the future can get better.

I'm getting sick and tired of people hiding behind the 'politically incorrect' slogan.
Saying that certain races have a "predilection for violent savageries" doesn't make you un- PC - it makes you an idiot.
And youth are the most disliked group in society today - people don't want them to wear hoodies, drive modified cars, go to the mall, listen to rap music, walk around the street etc etc etc.
That doesn't excuse violent behaviour of course, but we have to start looking at the root cause of this alienation.

You don't see Indians in the gangs in any proportion to that of Maoris or Polynesians.

So I talk of the NZ Govt bringing in Samoans for slave labour, you reckon you can argue that the British brought Indians to fiji, now how is that same, did the british chse the Indian out of fiji as they did to the Samoans here? No hmmmm shit.

I can swallow some of this Mike, Some Maori and Polynesians have been seduced by the gang culture, these to us are wannabes gangsta's, they walk around with their arms puffed out like they have basket balls under them. They think it cool, but when push come to shove, then you will usually find them giving state evdience against other members.
Some can relate to the to gang culture to Mike, because it is where they were accepted, equal, no one judged them. Shit be honest here, how many times have you seen a rough looking Maori or Islander and thought "low life" "get a job" yet how do you know that about them?
But some of us older members, we have done the hard yards some of us dont want that shit for our kids, so we try to curve them away from it all. But gang culture is also like family, we look out for one another & others family when times get tuff.
Theirs alot of answers to solve the problems with troubled youth, but this tougher sentences dont work, trust me, we know, been there done that and still moving on, its plain and simple, hard sentences dont work. Not saying their shouldn't be jail time for serious crime. I think prevention is better than a cure.

I sense some self-interest in your statement hated. Why should we trust someone who purports to be a member of a criminal organisation who asks for lower prison sentences - obviously because they don't want to go to prison.
