Electoral reform bill gets both barrels

Electoral reform bill gets both barrels
In a damning submission on the Electoral Finance Bill, the usually conciliatory Human Rights Commission says the bill should be withdrawn, describing it as a "dramatic assault" on fundamental human rights. It says the bill "undermines the legitimacy of political processes". Now I’m all in favour of curbing the excesses of money influence in democracy, a plutocracy is a real fear and is a direct outcome from unrestricted electoral financing rules, however Labour seem to have lost the plot on this. In the real areas they should work on, like anonymous donations, Labour have folded and seem hell bent on putting together a bunch of election rules that will give such a biased and vested advantage to the incumbent that anyone concerned with basic standards of democracy should be deeply worried about. If National was trying to pull this crap people would be rioting in the streets, Labour have to be told they can’t run with this type of legislation especially if the rumours that they will force it through urgency are true.

Hear hear. And you are right about the National comment. The hypocrisy of Labour-lovers is beyond a joke.

this bill just goes to mark labour as national socialist.

and not only labour but nz first and the greens.

The fact they are trying to push through this bill b4 an election shows they are terrified of losing it.

Its not that differen from the legal mechanisms used by Robert Mugabe to silence dissent. I wonder what will happen if people defy the law and embark on mass civil disobedience?

And.......... as predicted, now the back down begins.

If it wasn't for your beloved Greens backing this bill it would be a dodo Bo ber.

If fact it seems the two major parties of the left are the ones that are right behind it.

The Greens and Labour are the two parties trying to ram through this Facist law change NOT the parties of the right.

Interesting isn't it?

As the full ramifications of what is being proposed starts sinking in, even the mindless drones of the left, the few that have any morals left after the 2005 election anyway, are starting to raise their voices in concern. Thats good to see.

However, making this a Labour problem when, without the support of the it just would not fly is IMO a little dishonest. The Greens are as much a part of this as Labour and will no doubt be punished come election time as much as Labour will be.

Bo ber - you should be urging your Masters to step back from this law change as they (along with Labour) have severely miscalculated the mood of the people(remember them?)

I look forward in the coming weeks to you completely reversing your position on this Facist law change. I realise you won't do that in one fell swoop as that is not the way of the Left, however even you, thru your rose tinted glasses must see that this bill will do nothing to preserve democracy in NZ.

Oh Lego, you hear what you want don't you princess? I have always argued against plutocracy, and have supported electoral financing reviews and blased Labour when they refused to progress the anonymous donations - I still want electoral financing reviews, but what Labour are trying to push through here isn't anywhere near what I want. For you to fress that up as a back down is a little sad, you must've been pissed with Zaoui staying huh and need a win? Go bark up another tree lego.

Why must I be pissed at Zaoui staying Bo ber?

As per, when you back away from previous statements you try to deflect things to another subject.

If it makes you feel good to do that Bo ber, so be it but most of your readers will see right through it.

No comment on the Greens role in all this?

I'm surprised.

What the hell has Zaoui got to do with the EFB? You might as well start talking about your underpants or the price of catfood.

Sorry - let me explain - lego is our troll, he's come out making all sorts of suggestions of a backdown from me on the efb, when I've held this line throughout, I'm guessing Lego is a bit sore after Zaoui won his appeal to explain his need to have a go at me on this issue, chin up lego.

This is one of those rare times that I agree with you, just keep that in mind the next time you want to tell us about 'John Key's mates in the media'. if NZ's unutterably shit-house media were doing their jobs, the public at large would know how badly they are going to be corn-holed by the EFB and there would indeed be rioting in the streets, but the NZ media are way too fucking stupid to be able to succinctly inform the masses of this outrage.
