Compulsory third-party policies loom
Third-party vehicle insurance could soon become compulsory for all drivers as the Government considers lowering the financial boom on dangerous street racers. The Cabinet yesterday gave the go-ahead for a public discussion document to be written on making insurance compulsory. Ummmmmm – if boy racers are happy to break the law as it is, other than make insurance companies richer, what the hell will demanding compulsory 3rd party insurance do? Wouldn’t you want to target the ability of young people to buy ridiculously cheap cars at ridiculously high interest rates?

its easy really ... put all people under 30 in a morris 1100... cars really shouldn't be a form of entertainment ..thats what x boxes are for.
Seriously though , there is NO NEED for anyone to be driving a car that's capable of doing 200 kmh when our speed limit is 100 kmh.
But yes, fast cars for a dollar down is a DUMB almost criminal concept .. also .. BAN modified exhausts - who on earth allowed these to become legal ?
Some of these cars are so loud they wake you from deep sleeps - thats insane !
mind you , its not just boy racers who attach these "look at me " exhausts to their cars ..more and more i'm noticing family sedans, SUVs etc etc driven by joe lunchox and his wife blatting down the street emitting unwanted ( by everyone else ) noise.
NZ must be one of the few countries that allows people to legally drive without insurance.
Of course like all laws it is broken regularly but in the UK it is considered a serious offence.
NZ is far to soft on drivers (when it suits them) in places like Germany drunks are treated very seriously. In NZ John Tamihere racks us so many drunk driving offences he can't even remember the exact number yet he was not in jail (in Germany one strike and its do not pass go straight to jail) he is in parliament.
Now he is another nice little earner, his repeat offences don't seem to bother anyone, including himself.
When I went there I could not belive the wrecks on cars allowed on the road, in the UK you would not get a 100 metres without getting pulled over.
Oh hell 3rd party insurance wont do dick, lets just say, we are one of the only countries that don't do compulsory insurance, as like the US, we should at least learn from them, seeing we are going to follow them, does it curve the street racing, nope not one bit instead street racing takes on a different turn, cash, 1000 per player 12 cars enter one man wins thats 12,000 in one night, throw 2 grand on your insurance and 10 grand to modify your ride so it keeps you on top.
Seriously people has the govt thought this threw? doubt it, jumping the gun, just like the drug testing law. Just say this passes into law, whats to stop young people from buying a 95 Mazda rx7 (NO MODS) getting 3rd party insurance as stated then modifying the balls off this car? same done with a Datsun 323 or just using NAC which is and insurance for performance cars. so it does not seem like it make a shit load of difference, I think you all underestimate the passion, these people have for there cars. one mod, a Garrett Turbo price is $2500 to $3500, and you all think 3rd party insurance will stop it. very doubtful.
Now to answer this for longtime lister: BAN modified exhausts - who on earth allowed these to become legal?
The govt made them legal as to why well so they can get there cut..
It is a bloody long way to go, I think this quote fits the bill for some..
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty..Thomas Jefferson
maybe thats why they run.

yep, and when citizens are kept awake at night by callow dorks who equate a noisy car with a big dick then that's tyranny too...and you can quote ME on that.
oh you poor old fart your kept awake, oh no what the fuck is the world coming to when your kept awake, was world suppose to "jump down turn around and pick a bale of cotton" just for you...
because think you were that narrow long time, you surely proved me wrong.. if it bugs you move to the country.. Your probably complain about the cock crowing to early then or would be the cows mooing to much...
didn't hear you kicking up a fuss about the govt making them legal though.

don't assume that people who dislike your odious noise are all "old"
its pretty obvious to most that the reason you drive a loud car is because you're inadequate, insecure and equate the noise you make with being a big MAN. don't think that when you take off from the lights and heads turn to look at you ( thats what you're after isn't it? ) that people are looking because they think you're virile or interesting - mate, they're looking to see who the dickless wonder is who is so unsure of his masculinity that he needs to surround himself with tonnes of metal and make a big noise as if to affirm that , yes, you really DO exist .
get outta your car, hitch your pants up from around your butt crack and try facing the world from outside the safety of your hotted up subaru
in the meantime - keep suckin up that gas, its gonna be fun to watch you have to learn to walk when peak oil hits home
ltl cry me a fucking river, when you watch tv and you dont like the channel you turn it over, when you go to the super market to shop you make choices, Ill have that and no I don't like that.
if its to loud close the window your peeping out of and go watch TV, there look to dont see it wont hear it, how hard is that?
I wasn't assuming he was old, i was calling him and old fart, or is that the same to you? Yet again, it comes down to drive a loud car is because you're inadequate, insecure and equate the noise you make with being a big MAN you know if the argument was sensible you may have grounds but when put it in terms like who the dickless wonder is who is so unsure of his masculinity that he needs to surround himself with tonnes of metal and make a big noise as if to affirm that , yes, you really DO exist it really makes you look quite toss toss; I do agree some exhausts are loud, laws in place to combat this, but just for you, (so you understand) the purpose of the exhaust is for power increase and you think its for sound? to get your attention at the lights lol
You sound quite jealous of these young people that have passion to modify there cars ltl, I really think you need to build a bridge and get over it. What was it ltl did you pull up at the lights, in your Ford Gto; and Ver 8 Subaru pull up next to you and stole your thunder, oh no you poor bastard. But like long time listener I didn't see you complaining to the or about the govt that allows these things to be made.. Easier to pick on the wee young people is it. typical.

Talking of government control-freakery, take a look at some of the items that have appeared this week that I think most people have missed seeing:
1. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4213106a6015.html
"Police are encouraging the public to dob-in cyclists not wearing their helmets.
In the past year more than 170 cyclists in Northland have been caught without a helmet.
Under New Zealand law, cyclists not wearing a helmet face a $55 fine.
Northland police are now running a special operation, Operation Panacea, to increase the use of cycle helmets.
Northland road policing manager inspector Clifford Paxton says police want to stop a serious accident happening to a cyclist.
"Cyclists are vulnerable on some of the region's narrow roads that have little room on the shoulders and they need to take measures to keep safe, such as wearing helmets and high visibility clothing," he says.
"The laws are there for a reason, to protect the community, and we want to make sure there's compliance with the laws."
Mr Paxton encourages people to call the police if they see cyclists regularly not wearing a helmet.
"If you know someone who is habitually not wearing a cycle helmet we can speak to them, or particular schools if their students are not wearing helmets."
Mr Paxton says police will be focusing on cycle safety in the summer months, when there is increased traffic flows and more cyclists on the roads".

Hmmn Another case of the most ridiculour, pointless law ever. Designed entirely so police can get a thrill out of bullying people and extort money for their masters, the government.
Oh, and of course, push the "NARK ON YOUR NEIGHBOUR" mindset. I think we all realise that Adolf Hitler wouldn't have been able to do what he did without the "cooperation" of the German people (their willingness to "denounce" each other all the time)

And: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4213393a10.html
"Christchurch police are circulating a gory email that recommends officers shoot people armed with knives.
Under the heading "Why Cops Shoot Guys With Knives", the email contains stomach-churning photographs of a police officer with massive slashes to his back, chest and stomach.
The text of the email exhorts officers to shoot anyone with a weapon. "If you've got a knife, then you should die ... period."
The email has been forwarded to more than 30 officers and then to addresses that appear to be members of the public.
One man, disgusted by the content, forwarded the email to The Press, saying: "I got this terrible email today, which seems to be sourced from the police.
"It's disgusting that photographs of this nature are widely circulated and used in such an exploitative manner."
The Christchurch policeman from whom the email appears to originate wrote: "Have a look at these photos to remind ourselves why we have SRBAs (stab-resistant body armour) and should be wearing them."
The email continues: "To all the idiots out there who always say, 'Why did the cops have to shoot him? He only had a (insert your choice of weapons here, ie knife, bat, club, whatever). He didn't have to be shot'. To that, I respond, 'Tough crap ... shoot 'em'."
At least one of the officers forwarding the email was a senior sergeant.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Sandra Manderson said the officer who created the email had taken the images and the words from an American website.
The email was meant as a caution to officers to wear their body armour, she said.
"But he should have removed the words. They are totally inappropriate. He should have cut them out," she said.
Manderson said she was "not happy" that the email had been sent to members of the public, but it had not been sent outside the police force by a senior member.
National Party police spokesman Chester Borrows said the email was a product of "stupidity".
The images were "pretty gruesome" but "the guy who seems to have started it probably thought he was doing some good", he said.
"He was being a bit naive leaving all the red-neck, bigoted talk in there. The police don't have the public's confidence and it's slips like this that (make it worse)," Borrows said".

Ooh here's another one:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4216074a10.html
A man was shot dead by police during a domestic incident in Christchurch tonight.
Police were called to the incident at a house off Avonside Drive at 8.26pm.
A 37-year-old man was reported to be smashing a flat with a hammer. He then left the house and walked to nearby Stanmore Road.
Police were called and located the man attacking a vehicle on Stanmore Road with what appeared to be a hammer.
The shooting occurred at about 8.36pm on Stanmore Road.
A police officer was involved in the shooting, said police district commander Sandra Manderson.
The man died soon after 9pm.
His body was still at the scene late tonight.
The name of the dead man has not yet been released.
Police have cordoned off Stanmore Road from Avonside Drive to Armagh Street. Inside the cordon is another cordon holding a police dog van, ambulance, police cars and a body under a sheet.
A resident said he heard what sounded like a car backfiring at about 8.30pm followed by a rapid series of shots.
Ms Manderson said a homicide inquiry had begun into the incident.
"The homicide inquiry will be run parallel to the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) inquiry using separate teams of staff."
The PCA had been advised and would arrive in Christchurch tomorrow morning.
Ms Manderson said she had asked for the police kaumatua Rev Maurice Gray to ensure the cultural process of tapu lifting would be carried out correctly when the scene examination was complete.
Tonight's victim was the 21st killed by police since 1941.
The last to die before this incident was Haidar Ebbadi Mahdi, 37, shot by a police officer at his home in Auckland in August 2004.
Mahdi was killed as he held his wife in a choke hold with a knife at her throat.
The policeman who fired the shot had already been stabbed by Mahdi.
Police were later cleared of any wrongdoing in the shooting.

The way they go on about irrelevancies gives me the feeling that the police are trying to downplay the incident and we will hear surprising little about this again. Until the inevitable whitewash that is.
What is going on? Are the police really "scaping the bottom of the barrel" and employing more and more idiots?
I agree compulsory 3rd party won't fix the boy racer problem, however it will solve the problem that if one of those wanks crash their crap little car into mine, the damage to my car will be paid for by someone other than me! I cant understand how anyone could take on so much liability by driving without it! Imagine crashing your $5000 car into someone that just picked up there brand new BMW, Merc, or Audi etc, I would rather put the money into paying off a house rather than the damage to some knobs BMW!
Agreed Anon above it will help with repairs in damages... Though real car enthusiast ain't the issue, most of the real car enthusiast have insurance due to theft, its putting them all into one boat which is what see the problem being... the young hoon with the loud exhaust, thats is the heart of the problem for this, all car enthusiast have to pay for it...
