British Retreat From Iraq Begins
Shiite militia loyal to the firebrand cleric Moqtada al-Sadr extended their control over Basra yesterday, causing the American military more troubles as British troops begin their withdrawal from Iraq. As soon as British forces had handed over the Basra joint police command centre to Iraqi police, Sadr's men moved in, according to reports. The handover was to be the first stage of the British troops' final withdrawal. The United States military is now reported to be planning to send 3000 troops to fill the void left by the British withdrawal. According to witnesses yesterday, Iraqi police left when the Shiite fighters arrived and began emptying the facility. They made off with generators, computers, furniture and even cars, saying it was war booty - and were still in the centre yesterday. The embarrassing episode, which comes as the British in Basra are preparing to move their remaining soldiers to the city airport as part of a planned withdrawal, again highlights the strength of the militia in the city. It further undermines Britain's hopes of a smooth transfer and gives the impression of a rout. Sadr boasted last week that the British had "given up" and were retreating because of the Iraqi resistance.
Ahhh – just like yesterday isn’t it? Remember all those right wing voices calling for us to invade Iraq – ACT and National wanting us to get involved in this pack rape of a nation because our mates were going (never a surprise so many cops become National Party MPs – what is it with men and power and pack rapes?), remember all those talkback callers and bloggers supporting the war – for freedom and democracy (forgetting America had built Saddam up in the first place, forgetting that there was no immediate threat from Saddam, forgetting that there were no nukes, no chemical weapons and no WMDs found) – and now the beginning of the end, as Britain rushes to leave Iraq to desperately shore up Afghanistan which looks very likely to topple over as another defeat we are all left wondering when the last helicopter from Saigon moment will be – and what the legacy the West will leave behind – it is too soon to start writing Footnotes to this tragedy, but let’s start reminding those fuckwits within our own society how dreadfully wrong they were to support this selfish little mis-adventure.

So, a drop from 206,000 per year(619,000/3 years) to just 36,000 per year makes a mockery of all your other statements that the war is lost.
Which is it? Please clarify the situation for us plebs that don't have our fingers on the pulse like you do.

I am not saying that the war hasn't been persecuted in a incompetent manner. I would agree with that proposition.
Iraq was a totaliterian regime in the truest sense held together by force. No regime can be held together by force and this is a historical fact. You can argue this with Paul Buchanan by the way its where I first heard it. Sooner or later it would have fallen apart. The last time anything similar to the Iraq was in Yugoslavia and it took the establishment of of concerntration camps and mass murder and 250,000 dead civilians before cameras before the West grew some balls to do anything.
The majority of people killed in Iraq are being killed in a civil war between different fractions not by the US military. This is not to excuse the US from culpability when it does kill civilians but there is a moral difference between accidentally killing people and driving a petrol tanker truck bomb into a crowded market place to cause maximum casulties.
Finally democracy is possible in Iraq despite what we are seeing at the moment. The evidence is in Kurdistan where there is a democratically elected government with peace and security. Which is what the Shia should have been given in '91 when they were instead handed back to Saddam Hussein to slaugher. This is the reason why we're seeing the current violence in Iraq because nobody trusts the US to stay,fight and protecting them from a bunch of religious psychopathic murders so they have to do it themselves, by killing their neighbours before they kill them.
If you didn't notice Bomber fundamentalist Islam already hated the West. 911 preceded Iraq not the other way round.

I take your point regarding who sold Iraq the capability for mass murder. But you did forget to mention that the two countries responsible for selling this capability, Germany and France, were against the war from the start. What is known was the Hussein had set up a elaborate and covert arms procurement system to cover up the fact that he was building a WMD program.
The US is responsible for failing to provide security to the Iraqi people. But that still does not make them culpable for mass murder and for the acts of terrorists targeting civilians. If I took your logic then the NZ police are responsible for murder since they are in charge of security in NZ and since they fail to prevent them then they must be culpable. Your logic fails.
