When they’re brown, kick em when they’re down
More people believe that the Muliaga family should take responsibility for her death than the power supplier who switched off electricity to her oxygen machine, a Herald-DigiPoll survey has found. The poll was taken before revelations yesterday that the Muliaga family had sought help from Mercury Energy about their power bill weeks before the death of Mrs Muliaga. Asked who should take responsibility for her death, 40.6 per cent of the 703 people questioned said Mrs Muliaga's family should. She died hours after Mercury disconnected power to her South Auckland home, where she was using an electrically-operated oxygen machine. If there was ever proof needed that NZ has become a selfish nation that borders on garden variety bigotry, it is this poll, one can’t help but wonder if the Muliaga family were white if the poll result would be different.

In your eyes I do believe you would want Comrade Helen to legislate for every thing. Of course they should take responsibilty for there own lives and in this sad case their Mothers down fall. Do we as average Kiwi's have to provide every thing for these Island (or as you keep calling them) Brown skin's. They are no differant than any one else. They come to live in NZ they follow our rules and way of life. If not then go home. Would it have been any differant over there. I think not or it cold have been worse. Hae you ever thought of that. You call us biggetted, hey look at youself and your heritage Mr.

It wouldn't make any difference if she was white except that one of the following steps might have been taken:
1. call an ambulance
2. ask the neighbours for help to get her to hospital or to put an extension cord through to her machine
3. If her life depended on the machine why didn't they have back up power supply?
The power company fucked up by turning off her power, but come on, the family have to take some responsibility surely (like Liam Ashley's parents do?)
...
Billy T your lack of compassion would have your namesake rolling in his grave.
Dear anonymous poster - did you see any of the Pacific Affairs reporter Barbara on TV One or Tapu Misa in the Herald talking about the cultural issues that would have surrounded this issue for the family as to why they wouldn't have done any of those first two - and you don't think the family approaching Mercury first (as was revealled for the first time yesterday) regarding the bills changes things? See what I see as feeding all this astonishing blame the victim thing here is an undercurrent of racism, 'how dare these brown people have the bad manners of dying like this, it's their fault' - NZers love their systems of power and the pretense taht it is all fair so much so that they would side with a power company over and above the victim, which helps explain the viscious tone of somone like Billy T
Billy T's tone?? Perhaps he is rite, perhaps if these and other people like then looked at the way we live in this country of ours they would then at least try to follow. Like for instance wearing the Burka thingi into a bank or for a driving test, or any where else for that matter. I know as we have just come back for overseas and my wife had to cover her head and I couldnt have a beer for fear of being chucked into a jail far worse than Hotel Hilton Mount Eden.
So maybe when in rome comes to mind or are we all to PC for that.
No, I didn't see any of that report by Barbara on TVOne, and if what you say is correct it's sad that the cultural beliefs of this family prevented them from asking for help. But should Mercury Energy be held responsible for the cultural differences here? Yes, it does make a difference that the family had applied for help with repayments of their power bill, yes the company could have been more helpful and considerate - there are hundreds if not thousands of people in NZ who can't pay their bills on time and arrange repayment. But to claim the power company is totally responsible for the death of Mrs Muliaga I think is just going too far, and I still believe the family should take some responsibility. Mercury already gave them $10K didn't they? That's a pretty substantial apology don't ya think?

It says something about society when we have the bad taste to have an *opinion poll* about someone's death.
Just when you think we have scraped the bottom of the barrel you discover there are new depths to which we all can sink.
Are, no, it says something about Alt Tv that we have opion polls on people who die. People who rubbish the police, people who dont really understand the fundementals of reality and would rather stand up for people like Zaoui that dont belong here. It is the only way they can get ratings Ruth thats what we at Alt stand for.

Wow - I had no idea you spoke on behalf of us anonymous poster, I can't remember you being present in any of the editorial meetings, were you hiding? The fact you don't understand the issue of the Zaoui case but would like to comment on it speaks volumes, hush now anon, the adults are talking.
I think its all Bombers fault. Why didnt YOU pay their power bill? *Condescending statement or 'smile thing' inserted here*
I would imagine the poll would be even more in favour of personal responsibility if they were white.
I would imagine if the family were white it wouldn't have been news at all, there would have been no polls and certainly no blogs from bomber.
If they where white they would not of died
let me retort, if she was white and on the life machine and in arrears and spoke to mercury... it would not of gone to the brink of having the power cut off... hence she would not of died...
Assuming it went as far as the man turning up.... I doubt that after seeing her, her power would not of gotten turned off either.
few days earlier the same contractor was to turn off an ol peoples home but didn't. why? according to him he is doing his job... was there not enough or any brown people there.
now explain who is black, mmmmmmmmm I believe red necks would call the white person of that family a wigga, sorry my spelling sucks, but again who is black?
