Alcohol, pornography ban for Aborigines
Alcohol and pornography will be banned in indigenous communities in Australia's Northern Territory as part of a dramatic response to widespread child abuse, which was yesterday labelled a by John Howard as a "national emergency".
Which is interesting, because if it is a national emergency, then why hasn’t John Howard done anything in 12 years about the decades of underfunding and cycle of abuse much of which has been exacerbated time and time and time again by white Australian Governments, the stolen generation actions of whom, Howard refuses to say sorry for. The despair and community collapse of many impoverished Aboriginal townships is nothing new, the only thing that is new is that the election date is coming up, and no one ever lost votes in Australia by race baiting, it’s John Howard at his most obvious.

In this day and age when so much news is sad and dishaeartening, I think people tend to be a bit numb to the pain of others.
This article is the first I've read for a long time that has brought me close to tears.
White Australians and their government have a lot to answer for in their treatment of Aboriginals, one of the most precious races of the world with so much to offer in terms of history and culture. It just makes me sick.

Aboriginals have a lot to answer for with their treatment off ther Aboriginals NS...what should bring you to tears are the child rapes, domestic violence and murders, not your misplaced sense of white guilt.
This is a discriminatory law! If they take away their pornography and booze, they should take it away from all Australians to be fair.
They have a magical and unique culture, almost as good as Maaori, and it is arrogant for whites to enforce their ethnocentric versions of right and wrong on them.
I don't have a misplaced sense of white guilt, but thanks for your psychoanalysis. You are right tho', Aboriginals, or for that matter any race, should be answerable for their own child abuse, domestic violence and murders - NZs own statistics are appalling in these areas too. Did you read the whole article? Rapes of the Aboriginal chidren are by both black and white men.
Where NZ governments have, eventually and to some extent, addressed some concerns of the Maori population, the Australian governments continue to refuse to acknowledge that the colonisation of Australia has had any detrimental affect on the native peoples of that country, let alone do anything to improve the situation.

John Howard is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't to our Bomber. Thankfully, Howard doesn't give a rats arse what some self described "dissident" in the most politically correct country in the world thinks.
John Howard’s approach will only add to the suffering of children. The Prime Minister is right to describe the widespread abuse of Aboriginal children as a national emergency but he is wrong in the way his government is seeking to overcome it. There is no other group in society that would be subject to these kinds of measures!
As Gary Highland of ANTaR says, "Prohibition hasn't worked anywhere else in the world. Why does the Prime Minister think it will work in the Northern Territory? ... The heavy handed control of Aboriginal people helped create the problems of child abuse and violence. More of the same is not going to solve them."
What you see is the end result of colonialism.
WOnderful.
They have a magical and unique culture
Agreed.
almost as good as Maaori,
I'm interested, how one is culture better than another? Somewhat subjective don't you think?
and it is arrogant for whites to enforce their ethnocentric versions of right and wrong on them.
The sexual abuse of children is wrong - it is morally indefensible, culture shouldn't even come in to it. Obviously Australian aboriginal culture is not responsible for sexual abuse, neither is the systematic institutional neglect and cruelty that the Aboriginal people have faced. It is down to some sick, pissed up individuals who have been getting away with it for too long.
To be honest, to help people you need to respect them and they need to want to help themselves. All the do-gooding in the world won't do as much as looking at Aboriginals as human beings, showing them some respect and allowing them to look after their own affairs.
