Let’s judge cops on things worth judging them on

I think we all know how I feel about cops, but I’m only about flaying people for flayable crimes, news that Police Commissioner Broad had a porno movie where a guy screwed a chicken played in his house during a rugby club fundraiser in the 1980s, is not a flaying offence. Was it childish? Was it all a bit puerile? Was it a bunch of blokes late at night having a giggle like a bunch of naughty school boys looking at pictures they shouldn’t be looking at? Yes, yes and yes – but let’s in no way focus on something as puerile as this when there are actual issues regarding police culture that we should be demanding answers for, to take our focus off the real issues and allow Investigate Magazine of all people to allow moral outrage to cloud reasonable debate is not a step in the right direction.

Broad: Public can judge me
Police Commissioner Howard Broad expects his fate to be decided "in the court of public opinion" after revelations that a pornographic movie featuring bestiality was shown at his house early in his career. He hopes the incident will dispel any impression that he is "holier than thou" as he works on introducing a police code of conduct recommended by the recent Dame Margaret Bazley inquiry into the police handling of sexual complaints. "If I'm not the right person to do this then others will point that out to me," he said.

I would agree that it was all a bit childish and sbould be ignored until I read about the other allegations on the Investigate website, It seems as if Wishart has uncovered evidence of a systematic culture of rape in the police force and that the police were using black mail against politicians to prevent it being exposed, old news maybe but he claims to have people willing to testify.

I think this is a case of the media seizing upon one allegation that they can make headlines out of and ignoring the other ones.

I normally hate Ian Wishart but this story should be considered in full before writing it off.

The other allegations are of police accepting bribes, Mr Broad sexually assaulting his female employees, the sale of narcotics and the quashing of a pedophilia investigation - yeah, lets not focus on the fate of one chicken.

Bomber...you totally miss the point, presumably as you have not read the article.

The central allegations in the article are police rapes, and covering up a pedophilia ring.

Or do you endorse police officers binding up women against their consent and raping them, then stealing cash from their wallets after the attack?

Do you endorse a senior police officer on the Bain investigation telling one woman "I will fit you up you bitch."

Pull your head in and read the article before you rant

I don't think the point is that he watched p*rn. It's that the p*rn he watched was illegal p*rn.

If the fuckable object in the film had been say a 13 year old girl instead of a pig, would you still think it was a bit of laddish fun?

I too have reservations about Wishart. But I'd like to see bloggers go and find out if it is true that bestiality p*rn was/is illegal instead of making out that this just about Wishart's moralising.

Having said all that I think even if the object of the film was an adult, consenting woman, there are still issues to be looked at. Helen Clark said that Broad was only 23 at the tiime and so we couldn't condemn him. What sort of message does that send to current male police of that age? I agree that given that time lapse focussing on a general p*rn film isn't not helpful, but p*rn doesn't exist in a vacuum and in this case the film is part of the other allegations that Investigate had published which show yet again the police misogynistic culture in NZ (and by no means restricted the police).

I haven't read Investigate's article yet, only what Wishart has on his website. It seems that other media are being very careful about what they repeat - TV news last night focussed on the p*rn movie angle. I don't think they even managed to make the point that it was illegal p*rn. And they stayed well clear of details of the rest of the allegations. I haven't heard what the media are saying today.

no investigate - YOU miss the point - the chicken issue the cops media have jumped on is fucking pointless, the much bigger issue if I am mistaken is that of the rape. As unaha points out

The other allegations are of police accepting bribes, Mr Broad sexually assaulting his female employees, the sale of narcotics and the quashing of a pedophilia investigation - yeah, lets not focus on the fate of one chicken.

which is kinda my point, head pulled in and all
