Steven Cook of the Herald MUST GO!

I’m the first to stand up for press freedoms, but I’m afraid the Herald Journalist, Steven Cook has to go. If a person does a job poorly, especially when that job is as important to a healthy democracy as journalism, they need to leave. The pressure to get that ‘scoop’ has proved too much and has led to disgraceful behavior from Cook and the Herald over the last week.
His story regarding Mark Burton, a young man failed horrifically by the mental health services in NZ and who in a fit of insanity killed his mother was a journalistic abortion. Cook ran with KILLER AT ZOO – a despicably inaccurate, fear mongering story that only degraded the reputation of the Herald rather than shine light on the issue. Apparently Mark Burton isn’t good enough to pick up animal shit on his road back to redemption, thank you Steven Cook for only continuing to expand the negative stereotypes of those suffering mental health issues, people who have been failed by the mental health system trying to pick themselves up, only to get shat on by Cook and his mates at the Herald.
That’s dirty enough, but it gets so much worse. Embarrassed to be scooped by the Sunday News of all people, Cook went incredibly heavy on the woman, let’s look at what he had to say…
In a message on Thursday, Cook wrote: "We can play this one of two ways; either with your co-operation or without. We have made enquiries today into your background and have turned up several interesting leads. And I suggest it's in your interests to discuss those with me." His email ended: "If you think you can continue to hide in the shadows, you're sadly mistaken."
I’m sorry, does that sound like a journalist or does that sound like a prick? Not content to threaten Debbie Gerbich into giving him an interview, Stephen outs her publicly in the Thursday edition of the Herald, how dirty and vindictive.
So threatening people for interviews and smearing the mentally ill would seem a hard act to follow – oh but it gets better. Stephen Cook says that the wife of pack rapist cop Brad Shipton has split from Brad and claims to have interviewed Sharon Shipton BUT Sharon says he lied! This from TV3 News

Sharon Shipton, wife of convicted rapist Brad Shipton, has accused the Sunday Herald of fabricating remarks attributed to her. The paper claimed that Mrs Shipton had told them she was leaving her husband after standing by him through three rape trials. However, she says she never spoke to the reporter and is laying a complaint with the press council. The Sunday Herald has also come under fire for allegedly sending intimidating emails to Debbie Gerbich, the woman at the centre of the police sex video allegations. Police have confirmed they are making early inquiries into allegations made in the Sunday News that the Herald’s Assistant Editor threatened to reveal personal details if she didn’t speak to him.
Oh Stevie, they gonna make an example of you pretty boy. The Herald should be embarrassed more than they normally should be.

Is it actually illegal to threaten to reveal personal details? I suppose it's a form of blackmail. I hope for Gerbich's sake it is illegal.
One thing that interests me is that Cook actually did the threatening by email, an email that is presumably verifiable as having come from him. He must be feeling pretty full of himself to do something so stupid. I think if Gerbich had the guts to make that video public it doesn't take much to realise she'd stand up to this kind of bullying.

He sounds like a right wanker. Of course someone is letting him run with all this nonsense aren't they and probably buying him beers for his sensationalism? He's not completely in charge.
I hate to say it but HOS aren't even a tabloid. They are just a bunch of bovver boys and girls not really interested in the truth. Hopefully the Press Council will sort it out but one does not hold out much hope.
And that's why I stopped buying the Sunday paper... All they're interested in are smear campaigns and have long lost any credibility. Heck, they don't even bother running a spell check these days, let alone get their stories straight@
good work bomber. it's a shame the msm are so big on the accountability of elected representatives yet never seem to take any responsibility for their own actions. big on dishing it out but can't EVER own up and take it. Cook is a coward, but so too are his editors so i can't see them growing spines and taking responsibility for anything any time soon.
Well if you're prepared to public release details about some one elses private life, then you should expect the same treatment if you ask me. Making the tape wasnt illegal, nor was the consensual sex contained in the tape. It was released for shock value, and i wonder how much she got paid for it?

steve cook is well known in south auckand circles for his leisure activities some of which are being aired in the employment court today the no smoke without fire is very true in this case no wonder the police were conducting survelliance on drug associated properties and came up with him what a surprise he couldnt provide the paper with copies of notes of the story he said he was working on at the time

Aday after being ordered to pay costs for his employment hearing ,in a Truth Weekender Exclusive, Steve Cook gave so many clues to the identity of a part time sex worker , recently in Australia for a month , naming the Detective who went to her in laws to find her, now if and its a big if this is Steve Cook here ,this woman really is a police informer whose been helping the police with information on on going large drug investigations admittedly in one sentance shes not been paid for information and in the next is receiving 200 dollars, whose put her at more risk from her high up drug dealing partner with manic depression, the cop who thought he was talking just to her and id lay money he didnt mention the informing to the relatives or steve Cook whose now told the nation .
Shes not going to be hard to find, the ex partners parents will remember the cops visit . How many deaths does Cook get away with in the interests of Journalism, and more interestly what sane person tells a journalist they are an informer ,unless said person has threatened them or shares similar pasttimes.
