“Hey, where are we going to go on holiday?”

News that Fiji has fallen once again to forces of a coup has worried a lot of New Zealanders, where will we go on holiday now? As big brother to the Pacific region, we haven’t got too many successes to chalk up, as our expert’s sell privitisation economic policies to the Pacific states (which only end up aiding the crony corruption) we don’t have many shining examples of healthy Pacific democracies. What have we done wrong, why are there so many basket cases in our back yard and what have we done that could have prevented these problems? With Fiji now warning us that they will take aid from China if NZ cuts off it’s aid as a response to the coup, we are fast running out of options if our only cards are ‘aid’.

China eager to fill aid gap, say Pacific experts
China will be eager to fill the diplomatic vacuum left by countries such as New Zealand and Australia as they apply sanctions to Fiji's military regime, say political analysts.

I'd say keep going there on holiday. Realistically virtually all the "Coup stuff" is in Suva...the best way to help the ordinary Fijian, is to go there, spend a few dollars and have some fun.

To be honest, given the levels of corruption in the deposed government, maybe the coup isnt such a bad thing. Time will tell...

Withholding aid? Big deal. I'm not in favor of us giving our hard-earned tax money to the Islands anyway.

As long as we get to keep Sivivatu and Rokocoko.

Actually, having been there, Fijians are bloody nice people. And anyone cancelling their holidays to Fiji over this coup is an idiot. Chance of getting shot or arrested due to coup= zero.

How would you say Fiji compares to say Tonga Deano?

Tim S, having spent some time in both countries, Fiji is nicer than Tonga. Some of the outlying Tongan islands are nice. The main island (Tongatapu) is a sh*thole. Actually in both countries the main island isn't so flash. Most people are pretty nice, especially the Fijians. I see 8 people died in the Tongan riots but I would be very suprised if anyone is killed in Fiji- I just can't imagine anyone being irked enough to start a fire or pull a trigger.

why is it that you always assume that it is "us" who have failed these island minorities who have nothing to contribute to NZ? You are always blaming "us"...you are always blaming the victims, you area laways blaming the police, you are always blaming the doctors and politicians. how about for a pleasant change you actually lay blame where it lies : with the individuals, or inb this case the countrys themselves.
