Building something really iconic
My real problem with the waterfront stadium is that for something ‘iconic’ it’s a bit shit isn’t it? Sure, the spin doctors have tried calling it a ‘floating cloud’, but that’s like calling the clapped out rusting concrete of the Auckland Harbour Bridge a ‘Tiara crowning the Queen City’. Here however is an idea being thrown around by Jonathan Gunson, and it is a brilliant idea, constructing the stadium into a giant Waka would be iconic and the image of the stadium would quickly become international currency with News Media organizations updating the creation from above as the Stadium takes shape.
This would be a stadium we could all feel proud of.
What about a waka stadium?
Straight out of left field, children's book author Jonathan Gunson has a new solution to the Auckland stadium row – a "waka stadium" of Eiffel Tower proportions.
Sydney had the Opera House, the United States its Statue of Liberty and France its Eiffel Tower – and New Zealand should take the opportunity to create its own internationally recognised icon, Gunson said yesterday.
"Here's a chance to do something unique and put us on the map . . . we'd get non-stop coverage."
Gunson, whose grandfather Sir James Gunson was Auckland mayor for a decade till 1925, is the author of the Buzzy Bee children's book series.
He came up with the "waka" concept and posted it on his Alchemy Publishing website in the hope of stimulating debate and attracting Sports Minister Trevor Mallard's attention.
"He looked at it and liked it but said, 'Imagine the cost,' " Gunson said.
He is unconcerned whether his design or another of similarly epic proportions is built, saying he cares only that the waterfront site is not wasted on "a box to house 60,000 people".
"If they're just going to ram something in there, I'd rather they did it at Eden Park."
When New Zealand won the America's Cup, Gunson said, he realised the country could do anything.
His concept, which would need to be redesigned by an architect to make it "do-able", includes underwater-lit oars stretching from the stadium top to the seabed, parks at both ends of the oval and a 290-metre-high prow with copper inlay Maori artwork.
Auckland's Sky Tower, the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, is 328 metres high.

am i missing the point here?? eiffel tower, sydney opera house, taj mahal, champs elysee...sports stadium that looks like a canoe? how is this boat ever going to attract your joe average citizen/tourist to go for a looksee and pay for a tour? Do you really think a rugby pitch surrounded by a canoe is going to make it on the post cards for NZ? I would find that embarrassing to say the least - hell even the sky tower is a better icon for auckland and new zealand. this is rubbish.

white elephant will not stand up to cost benifit analysis. Let just concentrate on winning rather than how much can be spent on the grounds.
Whatever shape it is, it will have a Board of Governors drawing big fees. Any guesses as to who will be on it?
With such a beautiful cultural design we could always use the Waka Stadium as a remand prison for maori after the world cup. Imagine how well we could rehabilitate 'offenders' in such holistic surroundings so that they stop falling through the cracks in our society.
How about a stadium designed to look like a giant can of Lion Red? Or a packet of 'Holiday' cigarettes? That would celebrate modern-day maori culture. We could even get those companies to sponsor it.

Damn brilliant idea, its the sort of thing Dubai would do...imagine that lit up and broadcast around the world for the RWC Final, brilliant, it would become one of the most famous stadiums in the world overnight. Cost is out of the question obviously but to knock it as a potential icon...in my opinion you must have a screw loose.

I am loving this constant flirting between ‘AB’ and ‘hated by most/sission’. Normally I’m a bit too busy to read the latest tussle, but AB has appealed and I think it’s only fair I make a comment on the debate to date.
Coming from a poor family, and living in an environment where the final word was a punch in the face, I’ve always noticed that people from that place have a very short time span from making a rude comment to punching someone in the face. That the aggression and violence create a sub culture language that helps everyone navigate in a violent environment. The second you think the other person means you harm you attack them or counter threat in an over the top manner.
Now what I’ve also noticed is that there is a generation of net users who have socialized on the net and not face to face. As such they have lived in a world where you can be anonymously abusive to someone without any real consequences. I mean look at some of the things people say on this site to one another – you could NEVER say any of that stuff to some ones face without being able to back it up with your fists. Now don’t get me wrong, we all love a sarcastic and vigorous debate here, some of the funniest and most insightful lines are when we are having a go at each other. But those who are conditioned to on line interaction as opposed to face to face interaction will clash with face-to-facers because they will always go too far and simply be as offensive as possible, because years of lonely posting experience has narrowed AB so that nearly every post is an attack, needing to put the boot in first at the person rather than the idea, so as no one can reach out and give him a cuddle.
Whereas ‘hated by most/sission’ seems to be someone who is a face to facer, (clumsy attempt to hide IP address and spelling issues) who is very new to this experience and their aggression is very genuine so their counter response will be too. Of course the weird thing is the second ‘hated by most/sission’ dumps the Alpha Male routine he has a lot of interesting things to say – which is also true of AB from time to time as well.
(can I add at this point that I also do Children’s parties and bar mitzvahs)

Agree with you it is a bit OTT but thats what gets tourists in, and imho that would become something well known around the world...practicaly unfeasable etc etc but that doesn't stop it being the potential "stand alone" tourist attraction that Eden Park never could be. As for changing weather patterns?!?! Any change would be so tiny it would be irrelevant.

I think the main reason why Hated by most went off, was because the racial overtone towards maori's, like the rape of the tourist, most said there maori, yet one of them is a pakeha.
