Raising the drinking age will be worse for young people!

Let’s be very clear about two things regarding the raising of the drinking age to 20:

1: Raising the legal drinking age to 20, will not stop under 20 year olds drinking

2: Raising the legal drinking age to 20, will make things more dangerous for those drinking under the age of 20.

Raising the legal drinking age to 20, will not stop under 20 year olds drinking

Every time we see a rise in those under 18 drinking, we blame the lowering of the drinking age. I disagree, the real reason why I think those under 18 have more access to booze is because of the inane liberalization of our liquor laws where now everyone can retail booze. Supermarkets and even the corner dairy can now sell alcohol, and many of these venders sell to underage drinkers as proved every year by community groups testing them. We have dramatically increased the access and now want to blame lowering the drinking age as the problem. If we are real about wanting to make an impact on youth drinking, get it out of the dairy’s and the supermarkets, restrict it and police it. But that would require effort, lateral thinking and a real determination to change things, where as Labour are only interested in looking tough on a knee jerk reaction at a time of daily youth violence. Instead of turning real public pressure into the political muscle necessary to restrict alcohol access across the board, we get a piece of legislation that will not only do nothing to solve the problem, but will actually harm those it says it is trying to protect….

Raising the legal drinking age to 20, will make things more dangerous for those drinking under the age of 20.

Remember the reason why we lowered the age in the first place? 18 and 19 year olds would sit around outside pubs in car parks getting slaughtered on booze and getting into fights. Much better they are taken into the pub environment and learn to drink sociably than the no rules land of the pub car park was the thinking. Does anyone think 18 or 19 year olds will stop drinking if the law changes? Of course not, they will simply go back to the drinking in car parks, with no protections or socializing restraints. If this law change goes through, the next media feeding frenzy for next year will be ‘teenage pub car park fights!’

off topic I realise.

Here's a link to some footage that is reportedly the Chinese Soldiers shooting Tibetans. Makes me wonder why I haven't seen more of this in the media in NZ.

yeah i can see what you say about the level of dealing out there. it's easy for our youngsters to get a hold of. i think raise the age back to 20 AND close down all the dealers in the community. police the main outlets and teach youngsters how to appreciate a good wine. change the drinking culture.

delaers? dude you just need a fake ID or older friend. me and my mates dont got that, my 16yr old mate who you really would believe is 18-20, just uses his older bros ID who looks like him and we been drinking for a couple of years. by the time its expired ill be 18 anyways.

raising the age still wont change things.

luke, you should know i don't need a fake id. i don't want to stop you drinking. i just want you to behave when you do. get that together and there's no probs.

Me and my mates drink because we can, its a relaxant that is of easy access.

Well, we drink with our mouths if thats you mean by how? but if u mean like how much then we drink enough to laugh our arses off.

Drink box o beers or bourbans and usually get a bottle of JW red label if we can afford it (which lasts for at least a month).
Last summer between 6 of us we got 3 boxes o coronas, box of steinlagers, box of woodstocks, box of double brown (for other people), and one mate had 4 cruisers with him (we havn't drunk with him since then)

We drink at one of my mates houses or the kindergarten playground (this is in ellerslie township), at our school or at partys i guess.

We have a feed and talk when we drink. Sometimes play drinking games.
After we drink we have more to eat or crash or whatever.

Answered dear jimmy:)

Yep Bombs it won't as i can proove. Btw when we go to that kindergarten, its usually about 15-20 o us. About 4 or 5 of us are 18.

Luke,

But why do you drink?
At 17, don't you have anything better to do with your time?
What if another group of youths walked through the school at the same as you were drinking? Would there be violence?

It saddens me that at age 17, you need alcohol to relax.

Thanks for answering the questions Luke.

Bomber, do you have any questions/answers as to why young people feel the need to drink?

Why do i drink?

Great way to socialise i guess with friends.

Yeh i do have better things to do, just because i drink does not mean it's the only thing i do. I can say same for people in this blog.

Umm i don't know, never been confronted with that situation, why would there be any need for violence. Don't throw me a "what if" that could happen anywhere e.g: Me and my friends could bump into some other teens when at a concert...would there be violence?

I did not say that it was the only way to relax did I? Don't go twisting truths to make your own destructive judgement.

anon: your one to be calling me a moron, if you got nothing constructive to say that helps come to a conclusion then you are a like a child with your statements of terms you have no understanding of.

note:
Moron:*Originally a scientific term, coined by psychologist Henry Goddard from a Greek word meaning "foolish", and used to describe a person with a genetically determined mental age between 8 and 12 on the Binet scale. It was also once applied to people with an IQ of 51-70 and was a step up from "imbecile" (IQ of 26-50) and two steps up from "idiot" (IQ of 0-25)

I didn't say anything one way or the other Luke, just expressed remorse at youth needing to drink thats all.

I asked about other youths because that is a reality today, gangs of youths fighting.
I didn't say you and your mates would start a fight, I just wanted to know what would happen.

You and bomber are so defensive in your conversations it is really off putting.

Explain your defensiveness?
I don't have to, you just provided one for me;

"oh my apologies, i must of got the wrong idea ofcourse didn't i..."

Instantly defensive, using sarcasm.

Don't worry, I will not ask your opinion again.
