PREDICTIONS PLEASE:

What does everyone think the Auditor-General’s report will say today?

MY PREDICTION: Labour to pay back pledge card, Greens to pay back more than they think they have to pay back, NZ First and United will dispute the amount they have to pay.

I think it will say all of that - the question will be how Margaret handled it

Oh - announcing the surplus yesterday made sense, it can only be headlines for one day, because by tonight the whole story will be the report - the tax item will be off the agenda again, so well controlled by Labour...

What about - Most parties to pay some money, but smallish amounts. The report then requires parliament to sort out the rules about pre - election parliamentary funded advertising. This will be why it is being presented by the AG as controller.

Just FYI, the AG's report won't tell anyone to do anything - that's not his job. He will just rule that a bunch of money was agin the rules.

The speaker (being responsible for Parliamentary services) has to (will) either disagree (I don't see it) or say what she's going to do about it.

Going forward imagine this might involve encouraging some rule changes.

In the immediate future I hope she directs ParlSev to start enforcing the rules as they stand.

Presumbly she will encourage those who benefitted from the illegal spend to pay it back, although I'm not sure she can force them (and it appears there is currently no actual mechanism for repayment).

There's also the possibility of parties taking the difference in reduced ParlServ allocation in coming years, though that doesn't strictly satisfy justice.

She could presumable refer the parties (or ParlServ) to legal authorities too. Don't see it.

I make it Labour hit for the pledge card and a bunch more. Which they (or technically, Clark) may pay. Just because that's what people're saying, though heaven knows where the money will come from.

I think the Greens' impression of what they're up for is based on the AG's response to their response to his draft, so it's probably reliable. Still more than they'll think they should be liable for, but they've said they'll pay it.

UF will pay 4500ish unless they are actually made to pay more.

According to Farrar, NZ First will pay up, but I don't know where he got that.
