NEWSFLASH - NORTH KOREA NUCLEAR WEAPONS TEST

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korean government officials said North Korea performed its first nuclear weapons test Monday, the South's Yonhap news agency reported
North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the country has performed a successful nuclear test.
According to KCNA, there was no radioactive leakage from the site.
South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the Yonhap report.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.
The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

"Have you any fucking idea how busy I am Hans Brix?"
How you like shark - Hanz Brix?
Maybe Mr Bush misunderestimated the evil-doer
Great post Karlos! Thank goodness the leader of North Korea isn't an insane lunatic like the leader of Pakistan, then!
Oh, wait...it's the other way around, isn't it? Oops.
Actually I am in Japan at the moment. Maybe the joke will be on me.
Hi deano,
insane lunatics = george bush, ehud olmert.
Now I'm not saying kim jong II isn't also an insane lunatic, but you have to put things in context.
Perhaps you think Mushrraf is the definition of sanity and sensibility?
You'd think that because he joined that preposterous war on terror.
This from Robert Fisk (from bombers post http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article15235.htm)
The greater irony, of course, is that if we were really concerned about the spread of nuclear technology among Muslim states, we would be condemning Pakistan, most of whose cities are in a state of almost Iraqi anarchy and whose jolly dictator now says he was threatened with being "bombed back to the Stone Age" by the Americans if he didn't sign up to the "war on terror". Now it happens that Pakistan is infinitely more violent than Iran and it also happens that it was a close Pakistani friend of the Pakistani President- General Pervez Musharraf - a certain scientist called Abdul Qadeer Khan - who actually gave solid centrifuge components to Iran.
You'd probably think the israeli government is a model of rationality and reason and is completely mature enough to handle an massive nuclear arsenal.
Enjoy Nihon deano. It's a great place.
Look for the swastikas on their temples and curse them for being nazis.
Hi Karlos
Pakistani nukes, if ever used, will be used against India (who have quite a few more). that is why Pakistan's nukes do not concern the West as much. Musharraf's country is a mess, but he strikes me as level-headed. Certainly he is a pragmatist- he allied himself with America, because he knew it made sense. His country is full of jihadi nuts, but he himself is as secular as he can get away with being. I quite like him. His comments at the UN last month show how delicate the whole global power game is and how well he understands it.
(Nihon wa ii desu yo)
Interesting what you say about Musharraf.
Sure he may have made a good speech to the UN. But so did Ahmadinejad of Iran. In fact, his letter to George Bush actually had many good points. If only Bush had accepted his televised debate.
According to Fisk, Musharraf was threatened into joining the war on terror. Regardless, it probably serves Musharrafs interest to side with the Americans. To keep those in opposition to him at bay.
Regardless of who Pakistani nukes are intended for, proliferation is a tragedy. The aggressive stance taken by the US is a major proponent of hostility.
I think you’re statement that “Pakistan is full of Jihadi nuts” smacks of islamo-phobia. So now you need the gentleman Musharraf to keep the nuts away from his nukes? Better keep good democracy away from them.
Do you ever wonder why people want to attack America and it’s supporters? Is it because they’re just nuts or because it’s antagonists deserve
Point is:
1. Democracy is only acceptable to the US if the government it elects is friendly to the US.
2. Dictators, tyrants, human rights abusers, hoarders of WMD are acceptable to the US if they are friendly to the US.
These double standards are radicalising people around the world against the US.
I hope we don’t see a nuke used in combat in our lifetime, but indication is, the US is just itching to test a “tactical warhead”, probably against Iran.
My thought remains: disarm bush.
...
Good points Karlos
