Great – there are 300 million of them now

Yay, the most irresponsible culture on earth now has 300 million people. America is 5% of the world population yet consumes/wastes 25% of the worlds energy and creates 5 times more waste than people living in developing countries and they use 3 times more water than anyone else. And in only 40 years they will jump to 400 million. Great.

US population reaches 300 million
The US population has hit 300 million people, just 39 years after it reached 200 million, according to US Census Bureau estimates.
The population reached the milestone at 0746 (1146GMT) - a timing based on calculations that factor in birth and death rates and migration. The bureau's maths suggests that the US gains one person every 11 seconds.

Er...the reason they consume that much energy and produce that much waste is because they like have a developed economy and like produce goods and services and stuff...as opposed to 'developing countries' who are, well, developing...OMG! Stop the press...a country with factories uses more energy than ones with subsistence farming and nomadic camel herders...how surprising...
...
Er...so what um, er, like happens, er when the other 95% of the world like um, er, wants that same standard of um er living then semisi? Could it be that the standard of living set by America is completely out of whack with what the rest of the world can actually sustain?
So you want to keep the developing world in poverty bomber? I bet they are so glad to hear that.
On one hand you moan about poverty in the world, on the other you want to keep them there it seems.

Um, semisi, have you been up all night? How did you manage to get that comment out of my posting? And you didn't even answer my question - the high consumption lifestyle of America (5% of the worlds population-25% of the waste) is NOT sustainable.
And you don't think that people in the developing countries are going to want motor vehicles, battery powered ipods and packaged food? As a country develops, so does its consumption...how do you propose to prevent that? There's only so much 'eco tourism' can contribute to any economy...
...
Ur almost there Semisi - and what would happen if everyone lived like America?
So what are you saying Bomber, that the developing world should be kept in a 'developing state' or that America should revert to subsistence farming and camel herding?
Easy to criticise but what is the solution?
...
wow - 3 posts and you get around to the point - is that a record? My point semisi is that the consumption kulture of America CAN'T BE COPIED by developing nations IF the development they are attempting to copy is the same consumption culture of America can it? America has to drasticly change the way they live and the development model adopted by developing countries can't be the same as America's current consumption kulture.
Try and stop them...
Does that include the consumption of medical services...energy used in developing science etc?
Does followig such a model mean that people should be expected to die earlier and scientific development should be stalled? Bye bye hydrogen car etc etc...
Where do you draw the line at such consumption?
...
And that's the issue Mike - Americans have to realise that for themselves - and those in developing nations need to realise that as well - but trusting in Human Greed we may not have political leaders who will stand up - so we face the grim realities of Catastrophic environmental change – the question Tim S is what we will be able to afford in that type of environment
Looks like Britain could be in the shit too ...
LONDON: Britain needs to use more recycled effluent as drinking water if it is to deal with a long-term shortage crisis, a report said today.
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) said using treated sewage was one radical suggestion that needed to be pursued if the country was deal with the growing problem.

Why can't we just buy Evian?
Bringing the developing world out of poverty will slow its population growth, which has to be a good thing.
People are consuming more but the growth in relative waste is slowing and will eventually reverse, due to cleaner energy and better and more widespread recycling.
It's not all doom and gloom.

I've heard of wishful thinking, but this takes the cake - proof please Deano?
excellent
You have just outlined a very good reason for limited immgration.
Although I don't think that was your intention.
The US may be the most irresponsible culture, but a quick look at bombers profile, and you will find it is one of his favourites.
...
Hahahahaha - look bomber likes american movies but hates america, he is a hypocrite (yawn) c'mon, you've got better than that right, like how about debating the point
Not a hypocrite bomber, just muddled in your thinking.
BTW has a look at NZ'ers impact on the enviroment?
Not so clean and green huh?
The developed countries are as irresponsible as the developing ones.
No throwing stones here bomber.
