Better support for cops

This story is incredibly sad and really brings home the need for extra money to help with combating the stress Police Officers face while serving. Don’t get me wrong, I believe there are a lot of ill trained cops out there, and the stress of the job makes them alpha male agro – but there must be a better way to help cops deal with the stress of the job with longer holidays and more counseling support services. A more chilled out, less angry Police force could stop tragedies like this one and be a better, more trusted service by the wider public.

Former detective killed wife in frenzy
A former police officer involved in catching the Rainbow Warrior bombers faces life in prison after admitting killing his wife in a bloody knife attack in April.

David Charles McSweeney stabbed Suzanne McSweeney up to 30 times in the arms and upper body, in what police described as a "frenzied attack" in the offices of the couple's Silverdale textile business.

It is really sad after apparently serving well on the Police force that he went on to slaughter his wife. But do you think it's really related to his job stress? He had left police some time ago.

oh boo hoo ! my partner worked in a demolition gang for twenty years .. talk about stressful... and hard yakka.. no nice pension at the end of it..just a major back injury and aggro with ACC... but he hasn't gone on to murder anyone or give them the bash as this guy did through his marriage .. maybe mcsweeny was just a controlling violent yobbo who happened to be a copper.
He'd left the force when he killed his wife anyway ... and was in the textile trade.. now THAT'S a stressful industry !

Bomber has simply shown the compassion he has always shown prisoners, except this time aimed at a cop – your surprise and need to comment on it is the surprising thing, perhaps your minds are opening

Does bomber have any compassion for the victim?

No, not the ex-policeman, I mean his wife.
You know, the person who was stabbed repeatedly.

Did bomber start a thread concerning her?

This man didn't stab his wife because he was stressed, he stabbed her because she was leaving him.

If you would note, bomber was actually having another dig at the policeforce.

Oh god, here comes the victim thing again, duck Bomber (christ son they have a go at you even when you are being sympathetic to one of their cops don't they?)

Yeah, the victim thing.

The same argument bomber uses.

Or do you only see one group of victims?

"...one of their cops..."

Us and them, nice black and white viewpoint.

Hey guys ... he SLAUGHTERED his wife. After the recent comments on this site about 'mates' sticking by wife beating, abusive, control freaks ... how come this gus suddenly deserves sympathy.

Go figure...

I can't figure this out either.

On this blog, cops are scum, and if they commit a crime, it vindicates their scumminess.

Unless the policeman kills his wife, then he is a victim.

A bit misogynistic don't you think?

Absofuckinglutely. Every instance I have been in that has had the cops involved (beating, suicide attempts, peeping toms (which is very scary for a single mother alone), vandalism, break ins ...) they have been incredibly helpful and friendly. My son has had experiences where his teenage friends have been mistreated by cops, but I haven't so don't feel it's my place to comment.

Having said that (here she goes), I'm a great believer in not judging something unless you have actually been in the situation yourself (as in, if you haven't had an abortion then don't condemn those women that have, if you haven't been beaten then don't condemn the women that still stand by their man ... whatever)

Next time someone (and hopefully not my husband) beats the shit out of me - I'll be calling the cops and I'll pray that they'll be there for me, as they have been before

Killing women (especially partners) is rarely seen as murder in NZ - mans-laughter.

OF COURSE I feel an enormous sympathy to Suzanne and her family - you have twisted what I was saying here - and because I can't work out if you are being serious or stupid, I have to state it! My point here was that Police need to have counselling because the heavy shit they deal with can make them snap - that doesn't justify McSweeny's actions - indeed the manner in which he got a quick low publicity trial has raised questions - but if we don't want to see a repeat of this we should try and learn from the mistakes made here with McSweeny

'Stupid' of course Bomber you know that - after all you are the only one here who is smart.
