American Police Overkill?

Ever want to step into the overkill mindset of America? Look at this gemstone of a story.

Suspect shot 68 times
MIAMI - A fugitive gunman accused of killing a Florida sheriff’s deputy was shot 68 times by SWAT team officers who found him hiding in the woods, according to autopsy results.

Police fired 110 shots at Angilo Freeland, 27, the target of a massive manhunt in central Florida following the shooting death of Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Williams Thursday.

“That’s all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

I know luke, to a degree it would be better to dispatch cop-killers with a single shot, minimising cost to the taxpayer, but hey, can't be too choosy. Over here a similar guy like Carlos Namana could be out in only 10 years...not that's crazy.

good job, sorted that prick out didn't it! he kills someone then hides in a forest..where is the remorse? bomber and lil luke probably think he should have been lured out with tea and biccies then sentenced to 400 hours community service and then awarded $170,000 in compensation because a witness decided they cant go through with it...and then they will sing their praises

Reminds me of an old jungle warfare axiom: the first clip is for the bush and the second for the enemy. Sounds like the good ole' sherriff's posse were all Vietnam vets just working on instinct...or people trained by 'Nam vets. Of course, it is possible that they just missed most of their shots what with the excitement and adrenelin and all.

Tim S i thought there was the possibility for a death sentance for anything involving the death or injury of a cop?

haha Tim S, hey do you really feel that a shot to the head or any kind of death sentence to offenders is right?

fighting fire with fire doesn't put it out, killing an offender because you feel thats what they deserve (same mindset as the killer) doesn't make you any less savage or inhumaine than them does it?

Yes I absolutely agree in the death penalty for murder, and especially so in the case of cop-killers.

I'm afraid that fighting fire with fire does put it out. This guy will not be killing any more cops will he?

The 'broken windows/zero tolerance' policies instituted by guy like Guiliani in places like New York City have led to it having lower crime rates than any time virtually in living memory, which says something...

Killed a cop. Unlucky.

The cops in this instance wanted to return the body to relatives in a condition fitting of his crime.

Closed casket for sure.

Yo Rangi, pity he didnt think of that before he put 8 bullets into a cops head.

Polk country has a lot of scrub forest and swamp. If the suspect was concealed, dug in or familar with the terrain, and if he was shooting at the SWAT team, then the justification for 110 shots fired becomes more feasible. The question is how many officers in the SWAT team? If there were five or six that equates to about 20 rounds fired per man, with 12 rounds hitting the target. However, the only real justification for the 68 hits was that the SWAT team members were on semi-auto and unsure that the killer was down for the count. Better to be safe than sorry when confroting an proven cop killer who could still be alive and armed.

As for the sherriff's claim that they ran out of bullets--yeah right! That is what makes the overkill a bit excessive and to my mind, some sort of post-mortem revenge for the death of a colleague. Ah well, the world is no worse for Mr. Freeland's utimely departure from this plane...

the cop that died was a known racist also a cousin of mine was threatened by this same cop who straight up called him a n***** and threatened to shoot him,as for the rest of the cops that was cold blooded murder, they weren't gonna let him live,he was unarmed at the time he was shot, the suspect had contacted his relatives who convinced him to give up,that was his intention when he got shot 68 times
