Nats back Govt bill to tackle gangs

Nats back Govt bill to tackle gangs
Political bipartisanship over tackling violent crime is continuing in Parliament, with National backing Government proposals for tough new penalties for gang-related activities. A day after Parliament voted almost unanimously to allow Manurewa Labour MP George Hawkins to introduce his private member's bill placing restrictions on applications for liquor licences, the Government has produced an amendment to the Crimes Act doubling the penalty for gang membership. The Organised Crime (Penalties and Sentencing) Bill increases the maximum penalty for participation in an organised criminal group from five to 10 years and allows police to use interception warrants to investigate gangs. The bill also amends the Sentencing Act to allow judges to consider membership of a gang an "aggravating factor" at sentencing, which could lead to longer sentences for crimes committed by gang members.

Hold on, hold on, hold on – while every politician clambers to be seen as tough on crime and with a public baying for blood in the wake of some pretty hideous crimes, we suddenly have all these police powers being rushed through Parliament – well that’s never a good recipe is it? Firstly making being in a gang an aggravating factor won’t do a damned thing to gang crime and will only see more gang colours inside prison and we see the current pressures that is bringing to our corrupt, violent and racist prison system, if you want to tackle organized crime you attack them with the old format SFO to bring down their financial structures rather than longer pointless sentences and secondly what the hell is this “interception warrant” and what new powers will that bring? Is this the break into your home, plant spy cameras and record for 4 days without any independent judicial over sight, and are we whipping up gang fear to pass this through without any questions asked?

Bomber: I understand your concerns about police powers. At the same time, I've seen the hard core gang people in prison. They are unrepentant career criminals. Targeting them makes a lot of sense. Cut off their "air". Keep them in longer. They clearly do not understand that what they do is wrong. I've been threatended by Mongrels wanting me to bring cellphones into jail.

"We dogs will be out one day and meet you on the street. we'd like that to be friendly."....and so on.

Maybe have special maxi gang prisons, too, to keep them the hell away from other crims. As you say, the gang presence in prison is a very negative one. It's one of their prime recruiting grounds.

I'm starting to fear for the future of my Scout Troop. A few months ago we were tramping and, by accident, wandered onto some gov't land. We were noticed, and a police car with two uniforms in it came and warned us off. But, now, just think about it.

THere was a gang of us, no question. We were wearing gang colours, no question (surely a scout uniform and gang colours fit the same legal definition!).

Wow! We could all, (including the ten year olds,) be doing ten year stretches now! Ouch!

What's that you say? "The rule of common sense will prevail!" Oh, come on! As the Labour-led government's own response to the EFA proves, there's nothing common about ense any more, it's an exclusive commodity of the judging class!

Skip the Scouter - where exactly was this "government land"?

And no, scouts don't find the definition of a gang as they are not involved in any criminal activity.

What wealth do street gangs have bomber?
Best lock them up, for longer if neccessary.
Supermax prisons with 23 hour lockdown sounds like a nice start.

How am I not suprised though that you take the side of the people who are committing horrific crimes in our community.

Me too NS, I was listening to Pam on Nat Radio the other day and she sounded like she'd had the shit scared out of her.

Faye - I'm sure you're really a nice person but I think you should seek professional help as you seem to have more issues than Bo ber, Tim and Hated all put together.*

Twas a bit 'Natural born killers' for my liking. Wouldn't really call it cutting edge. None of the people she interviewed were going to admit anything but at least the Tribesman fella seemed to have a sense of humour.

Hopefully next week will be a bit better.

NS serious you really ain't that naive to consider the media's version of gangs truthful, some if not most of the rubbish on that show, was of yester-year.

As for the big wide problem with so called gangs and this bill which probably will make it into law, really wont do a hell of a lot.

Prison is seriously not that hard, It's all routine up at 6am go to work cleaning or in the kitchen, cooking breakfast for the other crims ..Then shit, shower & shave.. watch Tv or go to school or out to the yard, weights room, whatever... it's all routine.. only issues inside is with other big or little macho superman, wants to do your lag and there lag at the same time.. That's the only problem... there's drugs inside, you can even get sex inside..(not as you gay people are thinking) Special visit arrange a prostitute and get thy nob polished..

"Yet this bill have they thought it through? unlikely, way to much time in parliament with just to many MP's thinking with there little head. I realise my fan club will look at my comment differently, sadly enough I can't help them come to grips with there own issues, I can only imagine, that some people where just not ment to understand these things. I hardly if not at all, believe, that long sentence with curve much at all, in fact, things will probably remain just the same. If this does become law , I guess it will, prisons will just be run by gang members to the point you all will need to build seperate prisons just to house them and to keep the gang violence down, just as they do in Paremoremo and in Chch, yet at who's cost? $16 dollar tax cuts only to have, it taken back to build more prisons.

Even if Gang members are inside, things still continue to grow and move...networking amongst will become easier.. Bizzo will take on a new twist. Seriously if this worked everyone will be doing it & you would be seeing results, the mare fact that it's still a problem, should paint a thousand words.

QUOTE:"Better to appear like there doing something..(I guess) yet really there something, is, in actual fact, nothing positive at all. But the appearance is always good.. as it plays to minds of the masses..
