bulbs, liquor, gaming.
Light bulbs:
the old ones are great - they are good for taking the nip out of the air in a room. They don't lose the heat - the room gains the heat. Light and heat - two for one. I have these damnable new bulbs and the quality of light is awful - harsh white with a blue tinge - and weak, they are so weak. And they emit no heat at all, which is a massive draw back in the average household where you don't want to have to put heating on in every single room.
Liquor outlets:
More the merrier, despite the bad look. I voted in Eden and Grey Lynn for the end to the dry zone. We won and the place is not dead anymore. It's very civilised. Yes, we had that stabbing outside Radarz Tavern, but that might not have been booze related. Try living out West, mate, in the damp zone, the licensing areas. Compare that to Kingsland and even Mt Albert now days - those places are vibrant. There's more vitality at the Pt Chev shops than the whole of Henderson after dark. I strongly disagree with Mr Bradbury's Andertonian conservatism on this one. Cheap booze would be wonderful, why should drinking be the preserve of the wealthy? But, I also don't begrudge the putting of this matter to the vote once in a while in localities.
More importantly:
All gambling charity from pokies must go to the local community ONLY - not spent elsewhere - these funds to be administered by the local community board. Having Otara gaming money going into the pockets of the Canterbury bloodstock fraternity because the pubs themselves choose the "charity" is totally unacceptable.

Tim: If you're buying the harsh blue light low-power bulbs, you're getting the wrong ones. Get the "warm light" bulbs rather than the "daylight" bulbs. The warm light bulbs are much like incandescent bulbs as they glow yellow rather than blue. I hate the blue ones, but have used low-power bulbs almost exclusively for 10 years. The Philips ones are also usually "warm" light.....not blue.
