I don't like the "Kiwi" label myself for these solid enterprises. Sounds a bit silly. Kiwisaver - yes, Kiwirail - no.
The official announcement from the government is due at Wellington Railway Station later this morning.
--------------UPDATE 9:30PM Wed. 02/07/2008
After transfering $12 billion to Toll Australia, Dr Cullen was able to secure the domain name. Phew! That was lucky :)
It appears today it's online:

I'm guessing, having been through a few mergers / acquisitions that "KiwiRail" as a company may not yet exist,so Toll will be the current name of the company (or part thereof) that will become KiwiRail...and the assets, including the domain name would then be transferred.
ReplyDeleteWow truthseeker, mental health nurse, linux user AND firsthand experience of a number of corporate mergers and acquisitions. I'm impressed, you truly are a renaissance man (or full of shit I haven't quite worked out which yet).
ReplyDeleteArgox
the government is buying the company so will get ownership of the domain name with it
ReplyDeleteargox: I'm a curious guy with a widely varied career and I'm over 50. That's life experience.
ReplyDeleteI've also worked in the hotel/ hospitality industry, banking, credit, security, been a bartender and a bouncer.
Then I turned 21.
Try it. It's good for you. Don't measure others by your own life it is hase been narrowly focused or highly specialised.
Another fuck-up from Clark and Cullen. Nationalising more and more industries in the best socialist style.
ReplyDeleteTruthseeker - fair enough Mr-Know It-All, with all that life experience maybe you should become a cop? Titter.
ReplyDeleteStill, good luck in your quest.
Avenger - I think Clark and Cullen have proved they are hardly socialists. Unfortunately, natural monopolies (such as rail) generally work better when under centralised government control.
Argox.
I note there's a post on No Minister about the name being lame too.
ReplyDeleteKiwisaver sounds alright as does Kiwi bank because they are financial services and brands, but the railways is a physical presence and operation involved in solid things, which is why I don't like a hokey moniker like "Kiwi" being attached to it.
It's sort of like "Smart" when the govt. uses it, as in Smart Sanctions, etc. - it means it's actually really dumb. So if we take the Kiwi thing to extremes as the other post was doing we'll need a list:
KiwiArmy
KiwiPolice
KiwiGovernment
KiwiLove
KiwiCare
KiwiWhatthefuckever
Labour's election slogan will feature the word "Kiwi" - it's a certainty isn't it?
Delicious tale there Tim.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the domain will be worth a few mill to Toll.
But isn't cybersquatting illegal now.
You might need to chck with the boys at Computerworld.
...
ReplyDeleteWith oil $143 a barrel, buying the railway isn't looking too stupid now is it, in fact it is the type of radical action Governments need to do more of with global warming and peak oil
"With oil $143 a barrel, buying the railway isn't looking too stupid now is it"
ReplyDeleteThe issue is at what price they brought it at. Maybe you should address that instead of making sweaping generalised assertions whose truth you see as self-evident.
Well, I've just re-checked the site and it's is live and under government control.
