Does he have a mandate from the Afghani populace to remove all the provincial reconstruction teams and all the other aid including policing, human rights and other aid that comes with it?
yeh, leave them to fight it out among themselves, it's not our fight aye Bomber?
Mandate from the Afghani populace? Like the same mandate they gave for the invasion, you mean?
Invasions already happened, nothing can be done about that now, but something can be done about repairing the country and somewhat fixing what the U.S and Taliban have done.
It would seem a shame to withdrawal all that support to make a cheap political point without first evaluating the implications.
Not "already happened" the invasion is still happening. It hasn't stopped. The invading war machine has incresed in scale, troops, helicopters, planes, bases, drones, and killings. The invasion won't stop happening until they leave.
Yes because thats all our troops have been doing right, killing and murdering innocent civilians. Not building schools, training and helping a police force etc.
And please don't counter with any of that anti SAS propaganda nonsense that has no basis in reality.
The simple fact is withdrawl of our troops would leave the populace far worse off and still at the mercy of the Americans.
Ummm, no BobbyD - the SAS are handing civilians over to torture units, and that came from inside the SAS - how come you defend the troops when the troops are complaining about what they are being forced to do?
I was referring to the other incident, the warehouse raid.
And the fact that it was the SAS themselves complaining is more reason to defend rather than attack them. Of course it could be a reason to attack the U.S role.
I just think a kneejerk reactionary statement like 'lets just take the troops out' is not only foolish but would be detrimental to the Afghani populace themselves.
You're trying to paint NZ's involvement in this invasion as humanitarian? Whatever helps you sleep...
But it's not true, mate. That's not how invasions work. Flower it up however you want, but NZ troops are part of the war machine, and part of the problem.
It's a myth to say that the Afghani populace would be worse off if the invaders left, a ridiculous claim spun by the invading force. It's also an insult to the Afghani people.
I get your point BobbyD, the situation is going to be fucked if we pull out and run for the hills with no follow through. The situation's been fucked since two competing empires fought a proxy war there, Pakistan snuck the Taliban in last time we fucked off, slapping ourselves on the back for winning the world. Kinda didn't work like that though did it, and now we're back to clean up our dirty laundry. And you're right, we shouldn't leave them to have Pakistan and India being the next countries to fight - or continue fighting - a proxy war there.
But do you think stopping killing their children and torturing their boys might be a nice place to start.
It's a region who's borders have been defined by British map makers at odds with the tribal realities of the region.
Do you think they - the Americans - can truly bring this society, which has never really been governed centrally, and pull it successfully under the governance of a corrupt and incompetent government and walk out having created some sort of stability. Or do you intend for America to police the world, troops on the ground, in perpetuity?
Gosh, and I was told that all Hone cares about is beaches..
next you'll be telling me that the Greens are about more than taking away my traditional lightbulbs.
Afghanistan was already a hard an impoverished country before the New Zealand and USA invasion made it worse.
But then before that it was like this...
