The thing about Paul Henry supporters

Paul Henry opponents complain of abuse
Wellington students Narita Chandra and Niki Singh say Paul Henry's racial comments have stripped them of their national identity and led to a barrage of abuse on a website they set up to promote a protest they're holding on Monday.

The pair, who are law students at Victoria University, are organising a rally which will start outside Wellington railway station at noon and head to Parliament. They want Henry to be sacked.

"We are both first-generation Fijian Indians that were born in New Zealand and we both considered ourselves New Zealanders but, [after] his comments 'will the next governor-general look and sound like a New Zealander?', we feel that's basically stripped us of our national identity," Ms Chandra said.

"We are pretty offended and outraged by his comments and the response by John Key and Television New Zealand."

To drum up support for their rally, they set up a Facebook page publicising the event – which has since been bombarded with abusive messages.

The annoying thing in this debate is listening to Paul Henry's idiot supporters who all seem to think it was okay and not as racist as Hone Harawira's comments. The simplicity and stupidity of this defense is the desperate act of people who identify with Paul Henry and who are bitterly fighting for their own self esteem and social standing, recoiling that they could be judged as prejudiced and savaging anyone who says otherwise.

The difference between Hone's comments and Paul's comments is that Hone is responsible ultimately as a politician to the people he represents in his electorate where as Paul Henry is a bloody staff member on the Public Broadcaster!!! This isn't about free speech! Paul Henry isn't using biting satire to attack the powerful and challenge the privileged, he's attacking minority groups in terms of power in this country and busting out racist brainfarts, why on earth should the public broadcaster of this country be promoting the ignorant views of intolerant rednecks?

All one can hear above the feral, redneck snarling dog of unchained ignorance from Paul Henry supporters are the screams of ‘PC madness gone mad’. Whether we like it or not, Paul Henry is very popular amongst talk hate radio listening, Kiwiblog reading, cross burners. Sadly those angry beige right wingers want their news reflected to them by an oompa loompa of hate, and that’s why Paul Henry hasn't been sacked.

TVNZ need to sack him for their credibility, and this farce needs to start a real discussion about what we expect from our Public Broadcaster and the importance of having a media that holds the powerful to account rather than reinforcing the prejudices of the reactive talkback radio kneejerkers that Paul so titillates.

I agree about the comparison between Hone and Paul Henry. For me, that is the problem that I have with the situation. If Paul Henry was employed by a privately run organisation then he is at the mercy of the owners, but he is not and he should no longer be on our state broadcaster as a result. No doubt he will be a profitable acquisition to commercial radio station seeking a ratings boost.

A breakfast television show has 'stripped' them of their national identity?

Are they even on the same planet as the rest of us?

Calling for justice in Palestine shouldn't offend you.

Geez Bomber. It must be so hard for you to walk around with that extreme lean to the left.
Grin, it just got a hell of a lot easier with Len Brown's landslide and the movement to the left.

It is a freedom of speech issue in the sense that I don't think you should attempt to limit the uses to which free speech is put.

Not because freedom of speech can't be harmful, but because it seems hard to limit it in such a way that's couldn't be manipulated, especially in unequal societies like NZ.

Why is it that biting satire is a permitted form of free speech but cowardly attacks on minority groups are not?

A better approach may be to try to equalise access to public forums. TVNZ may have a duty to provide this, but I don't know if that extends to Henry himself.

That's not to say that people shouldn't be responsible for the effects of their 'free speaking' - including getting fired.

I think there needs to be a discussion not just about Paul Henry but about those who support him. Like it or not many of these people are racists and it needs to be made clear that their views are not welcome in New Zealand society.

Yes maybe we should set up special camps to re-educate them into more 'appropriate' ways of thinking, seize their children to avoid having them corrupted by unclean thoughtsand alert their employers to their unacceptable thought process and political views.

Sorry but I'd rather live in a country with idiotic TV hosts than whatever leftard wetdream you get off on.

Oh dear, what a state the braindead knee-jerk reactionary right is in these days.

The call to start intelligent discussion is not a call of an over-bearing state you absolute idiot.

Actually I did not know much about Paul Henry.

So I had a look at some clips on youtube.

I was surprised. The fact is he is actually very very funny. He has a unique antipodean sense of humour. The rats cleaning themselves with urine thing was a crackup.

There was nothing racial to the Dikshit thing at all.

Laughing at accents, names of foreigners etc, while in poor taste is not necessarily racist.

But the GG thing crossed the line and was racist. Moustachegate was also appalling.

An apology was in order. And a suspension.

But I think the loss of his job is going too far. Its like life-imprisonment for shop-lifting.

The Indian government getting in on the act is just plain ridiculous and an interferences in NZs internal affairs.

If Henry was more contrite right from the beginning he would have kept his job.

The worrying aspect to this of course is there will be a backlash from mainstreet New Zealand against Asians – even in thought if not in action. And talkback hosts like Leighton Smith will use this as a grand opportunity to bash multiculturalism.

Before the brownskins did a number on dr.brash I think you'll find he wanted to do a number on their increased maori seats and their unaccountability to a majority of kiwis.
