NZ Police Nazi tactics by bribing children for their DNA sample

Getting better work stories yet folks? The vast amount of powers the Police have managed to scam from National isn't surprising, National are so pro Police they'd give the buggers fully automatic lasers if they could, but these new powers to force DNA from you based on mere suspicion and the NZ Police policy to bribe DNA from children must be challenged!

Police DNA tactics may face probe
Allegations of police targeting Maori youths and improperly obtaining DNA samples may end up before the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira yesterday stood by comments comparing police actions to "Nazi-style tactics" in persuading Maori youths to give DNA samples.

He said he would support youths and their families if they wanted to lay formal complaints with the authority, and they were working through that option.

This week Mr Harawira said he knew of cases where police had conned youths into providing DNA samples.

"One young Maori told me the police wanted the sample because one of their relatives might be known to police. Another told me the police wanted the sample in case the rangatahi [youth] got killed and the police needed to identify them.

"All of this is completely outside the guidelines, and I am warning police to drop these Nazi-style tactics immediately."

Criminal lawyer Graeme Newell lent support to Mr Harawira yesterday, saying he knew of a case where a police officer had offered a boy a cigarette in return for a DNA sample.

As my co-blogger pointed out last year, the NZ Police are racially profiling for DNA. Let me be clear, if you have been convicted of a serious crime I have no problem with DNA samples being taken, you have lost your rights to protect your DNA from the Police by your actions, but lowering the threshold from being convicted (or getting a High Court Judge to order it) to 'mere suspicion' is unacceptable ESPECIALLY when those powers are applied to children for Christ's sake!

I know the right wing love the Police and NEVER suspect them of anything other than the purest of motives, but forcing someone to give you their DNA for 'mere suspicion' is a Police power too far...

Police pressured clients into giving DNA - lawyer
Three clients accused of charges and out on bail have reported late to the police station and been told to give a DNA sample voluntarily or face arrest, a South Auckland lawyer says.

...'give me your DNA or face arrest', that sounds like the NZ Police are being very responsible with these powers which we have now lowered the threshold on down to 'mere suspicion'.

If you are asked by the Police to give them your DNA refuse point blank! DO NOT GIVE THE POLICE YOUR DNA VOLUNTARILY OR BASED ON MERE SUSPICION! What a sick little country we have become under National, that bribing children into giving the Police your DNA is acceptable to this Government and is acceptable to the redneck talkback chorus of clowns.

My frustration with my fellow countryman is they never seem to understand the consequences of giving the NZ Police more unchecked powers!

Let's remind ourselves that the Police have also stalled on making the changes in Police culture that saw Louise Nicholas sexually abused repeatedly and let's remind ourselves that report noted the Police couldn't make these changes without outside pressure forcing them to change their ethics.

Again my detractors will scream I'm being 'anti-Police', nothing could be further from my mind. I don't hate Police, I am very focused that in a liberal progressive democracy the powers of the Police always have to be counter balanced with the proper checks and balances and folks none of these powers have the appropriate checks and balances and that is unacceptable.
