Thoughts on 6pm National News

Here is my guess at what will occur at the 6pm news slots on TV3 and TVNZ. Both will decide on a half hour arrangement (to the detriment of public sphere debate and the quality of the news media holding the powerful to account), they will both decide on this course of action as a cost cutting measure which will have a negative impact on the ability of Journalists to challenge the status quo when their jobs are on the line so we will be left with only the most complacent investigations.

The Government will rope off TVNZ7, Maori TV and RNZ as 'public broadcasters' to get TV2 and TVOne ready for sale, most likely to the anti-democratic, hard right, Fox News Rupert Murdoch.

TVNZ
6pm News
6.30pm Paul Henry's new show, political based interview show with a hard right bias
7pm Close Up, very warm and fuzzy human interest and entertainment based light fluff stuff (no change from now then)

TV3
6pm News
6.30pm Sports based news show
7pm Overseas sitcom

Campbell Live replaces Sunrise

The continued 'dumbing down' of our nation.
Perfect strategy really. Shorten the news - make it more sensational - avoid 'hard news' and National go about their nasty arse rape of New Zealand (it's people and assets) and nobody will know a thing.
Perfect. John you really a smart bastard.

How right (as in correct) you are!.
John Key is actually some krismatic finger in the wind - know not where is loilties lay - INDIVIDUAL that can't belive his good fortune.
Problem is he has this driving foce of rags to riches - if I can do it, so can everyone else imperative (besides a wife and kids all the while telling him how wonderull he is) generating his policy and political approach.

As for the PSB thing - yes - you're correct. Let's say MTS and RNZ based on their record provide the Public service imperative. Let's also say that TVNZ7 AND 6 do likewise.
So let's just take te easy option.

Let's just go with fleecing New Zealanders (once again, just as we did with all the other natural monopolies - telecommunications (the "ether" bandwidth; traintracks, national grid; and to come Water and anything naturally given - gas, minerals, commonly derived national and natural identity - you name it).
What the Nactional should consider is JUST how pissed off an electorate might become, WHEN they wake up from "Change-induced" slumber.
I don't think anyone advocating short-term gain for long-term (and generational pain) has a particularly good future. I'd go further than that! I hope when such advocates of that learned philosphy (if they are still alive) are still around when it comes time to pay the piper, have a bunker and a bolt hole that is somewhat better protected by Chubb, closed circuit TV, digitally controlled gates and all the rest of it.
(Chubb will probably be too busy issuing parking tickets in somewher like Eketahuna at $50 a pop) than responding to some knob that should have known better in the first place

By the way, you lumped TV1 and TV2 together as "TVNZ"
Expect TV2 to find mileage at some time in the future with the re-emergence of a "newsbreak"as they desperately try to find a means of representing claims to stardom status.
If there was any justice, that'd be hosted by a Bill Ralston (or even a Fran Wilde at her most caked on makeup best.
Anyone else remember how that pok faced idiot (Ralston) was quick to brand the publicly owned broadcaster as "state tv", yet as soon as he came to have been offered an undeserved windfall by them, the lamguage very quickly changed.
