Boycott NZ until we are clean and green

New Zealand was a friend to Middle Earth, but it's no friend of the earth
As the world prepares for the Copenhagen climate negotiations next month, it is worth checking out the greenwash that has followed the promises made 12 years ago when the Kyoto protocol was signed. A surprising number of countries have succeeded in raising their emissions from 1990 levels despite signing up to reduce them. They include a bundle of countries in the European Union, which collectively agreed to let some nations increase their emissions while others (mainly Britain and Germany) cut theirs. Step forward Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Greece — all with emissions up by more than a quarter. Then there are the US and Australia, which both reneged on the protocol after signing it. And Canada, which never reneged but still has emissions up by a quarter (worse than the US) and shows no sign of contrition or of being called to account by the other signatories. But my prize for the most shameless two fingers to the global community goes to New Zealand, a country that sells itself round the world as "clean and green". New Zealand secured a generous Kyoto target, which simply required it not to increase its emissions between 1990 and 2010. But the latest UN statistics show its emissions of greenhouse gases up by 22%, or a whopping 39% if you look at emissions from fuel burning alone.

As National allow the wealthy polluters to continue to be subsidized at our expense, the rest of the world is clicking onto how much a lie our clean green claim really is. This piece by the Guardian should terrify the Government into action. The problem is that our Dairy industry has so much power (they were able to censor an entire chapter last year in our environmental report that criticized their industry). It will only be through external pressure like this article attacking our clean green myth before the Dairy industry is forced to change.

I am against susidisng farms, they should have to clean up their act.

BUT, seriously FUCK this pompous english wanker. Any one who has been to England knows that we are waaaaaaaay cleaner than them. Oh we burn too much coal do we? Thats because we don't have nuclear power plants like you cunts.

Even if you count the carbon miles of shipping our goods to Europe our agricultural produce STILL has a smaller carbon foot print, all with out the truly massive subsidies that EU farmers have always had.

We have a high rate of farm ownership do we? Thats because we don't have a population of 80 million people that can easily fund a nation wide rail network like the UK and Europe. Whats more england doesn't have the geographic hurdles to jump when it comes to building and maintaining a nation wide rail sytem.

NZ is also a much younger country, they had there rail system up and running while NZ was still being surveyed, you can't do that shit over night and when you consider that the Issue of Climate change has only been brought to the fore in the last decade or so - is it even remotely realistic to expect a small economy with a small population on a relatively large land mass to have over hauled its whole power network and built a massive public transport service, and turned the back bone of our economy on its head - all in the space of 20 years?

Not realistic at all.

Seriously this pearce tosser can take a huge step back and fuck his own face, jumped up paternalistic limey fuckwit that he is.

What a cock!

New Zealand turns out to be mining ever more filthy brown coal to burn in its power stations.

That is a flat out lie. This dick needs to get his facts straght and look at his own back yard before he opens his stupid cock-holster to criticise.

There is ONE coal power station - not "stations" as he said - that burns gas and black coal. 80% of NZ's electricity comes from renewable sources.

Bugger off pompous pommy git!

"We have a high rate of farm ownership do we?

That should say "car" ownership.

And yet for all the defensiveness of our two brave anonymous posters above, the facts still stand that NZ has let down it's clean green image, time to get punished for not living up to our myth isn't it?

Great editorial in the Sunday Star Times this morning calling NZ eco-hypocrites and backing up the points made in the Guardian. While our brave anonymous posters may be in denial over our lies, it's nice to see a strong editorial reminding us of it.

Time to make the big polluters pay.
