BREAKING NEWS: Richard Worth resigns

Minister Richard Worth stands down
WORTH RESIGNS: Dr Worth was minister for Internal Affairs, Land Information, Archives New Zealand, and the National Library, and associate minister of Justice.
Dr Worth was minister for Internal Affairs, Land Information, Archives New Zealand, and the National Library, and associate minister of Justice. In a statement this morning he said he was standing down with "deep regret". "I am resigning from the role for personal reasons," he said. "I tendered my resignation to the Prime Minister last night and he accepted." Prime Minister John Key said Dr Worth's ministerial responsibilities had been temporarily transferred to Maurice Williamson and he would permanently reallocate them in "the near future". He said Dr Worth had advised him "of some private matters in respect of which he felt it appropriate that he should resign as a Minister." "I will not be making further comment on the matters he has advised me about."

The Prime Minister HAS to tell NZ why his Minister has resigned - if they are personal reasons, a sickness or illness than we don't need to know the full details, but if it is something else the Government HAS to tell the people why a Minister suddenly resigns, if it is something else it will be on the blogs by the end of the week.

UPDATE: Police are investigating Richard Worth - will release statement soon

[UPDATE-- 11:10AM: PM's statement:

Statement on Richard Worth’s resignation

Prime Minister John Key says he has accepted the resignation of Dr Richard Worth as a Minister in the National-led Government.

"Dr Worth tendered his resignation to me last night, and I have accepted it.

"He advised me of some private matters in respect of which he felt it appropriate that he should resign as a Minister. I accepted his resignation and have advised the Governor-General accordingly.

"I will not be making further comment on the matters he has advised me about.

"Dr Worth's ministerial responsibilities will be temporarily transferred to Maurice Williamson. I will be making an announcement about permanent appointments to the portfolios in the near future.

Minister Richard Worth quits over criminal matter
LATEST National MP Richard Worth quit as a minister because of a criminal matter, Prime Minister John Key confirmed this morning, saying if he had not resigned he would have been sacked. Dr Worth resigned as a Government minister last night, citing "personal reasons". Mr Key said this morning the resignation was related to a criminal matter, but he would not divulge details. He was alerted to the matter last week, before the MP told him about it. In a brief statement, police said they were conducting a preliminary investigation into an allegation that had been made against a sitting MP.

If the allegations are so serious that John Key would have sacked Richard Worth, why did it take a week for John Key to act on this, he knew last week, why the delay?

Happier days up the Khyber on his unofficial/official business trip. -UPDATE ENDS]

Was it his dodgy business dealings?

The reason will come out one way or another, would make sense for the Prime Minister to announce it rather than it be leaked like gossip and potentially twisted like Chinese whispers.

After so many problems with this Minister, John Key really does have to give more details than this - is there anything pending over Worth that would embarrass the Government? Certainly if it's a sickness issue then that should be stated but left alone, but it's not good enough to just say 'personal reasons' - what has he done to need to resign? By not being clear it leaves the blogs to create rumour.

The Prime Minsiter has to be clear and show some leadership.

Whatever Worth has been alleged to have done, it must be pretty bloody serious, here's what John Key said at the press conference last hour

Prime Minister John Key told a media conference this morning that it was "wholly appropriate" that Dr Worth had stepped down.
"If he hadn't resigned I would have sacked him," he said.
"His conduct does not befit a minister. I will not have him in my Cabinet. I have lost confidence in him as a minister."
That's pretty damning isn't it, no inch to move on that call - IF it is as serious as this, why did it take JK to take a week to drop the axe?

Maybe rape maybe something a little less erious. stuff is saying its harassment of a woman. apparently there was another incident involving harrassment of a woman sometime earlier but it was kept under wraps. this is juicy stuff if you're for a left of centre govt like me.
1 TERM GOVT!
