Michael Jones, Va’aiga Tuigamala and Little Baby Jesus endorse John Key

Michael Jones and Va'aiga Tuigamala endorse Key
Former All Black greats, Michael Jones and Va'aiga Tuigamala, have given their support to National leader John Key.
The pair met with Mr Key on the campaign trail today in south Auckland as he unveiled a National policy to create five specialist trade academies for school students.
Speaking afterwards both said Mr Key had their vote.
“We certainly believe what Bill English and John Key stand for,” Tuigamala said.
“Change is not something to be afraid of. Change brings the best out of own people.”
Michael Jones says that there is a lot of what National stands for that is representative of the values and principles of the Pacific Island community.
“There has been a long standing tradition of communities like ours, Pacific people, voting a certain way but we believe that that’s diluting.”
The pair are against two pieces of legislation passed during Labour's time in power - the legalisation of prostitution and same sex civil unions.
Tuigamala runs a funeral home and isn't keen to stand for Parliament but Jones, who National's John Key asked to stand this time around, says he may do so in the future.
I am shocked! Two men utterly opposed to Civil Unions, Prostitution Law reform and the repeal of Section 59 that stopped allowing courts to protect abusive parents from assaulting their children for ‘disciplinary purposes’ are anti Labour and support John Key? You have to give it to Crosby & Texter, they certainly know how to earn their fee.

VOTE NATIONAL etc etc (because we're crazy)
Gotta love the medias great format there. Had the facts of the penultimate paragraph come near the top, the whole piece would have been an attack on all involved, but instead TV3 endorses gay bashing, oppression, and oh yeah, national.
Pacific Island and Maori culture are traditionally conservative on social issues.
They have more in common with National than with Labour on these issues.
Pacific Isalnd and Maori are also traditionally poorer, and so favour Labours economic policies.
So who do they vote for?
Oh and these two men?
Ex-All Blacks, they have huge mana to a lot of people, especially to their Pacific Island community, and you underestimate the respect and authority they have.
A bit like they would not understand your fawning admiration for Robert Fisk.

The thing you are ignoring is that up until the section 59, prostitution reforma and civil unions, the Pacific Island Churches always supported Labour, regardless of what they said or did.
Whether you like it or not, those 3 things fly in the face of what those churches stand for, so you can hardly be surprised when their is a blowback.
In this respect, I guess the churches feel a bit like the greens do - what have they ever got from Labour after all their years of support? Not much it seems.
I would still expect the South Auckland seats to come out strongly for Labour, just as it was no surprise the greens stuck with labour. But the likes of these two prominent ex all blacks who are very widely recognised as good guys (no late night booze incidents or spousal abuse for these two), coming out for National can't be a good thing for Labour.
I think it is a sign that Labour cannot keep taking the PI conservative views for granted, peddling the line that 'Nation will evict you from State housing, start dawn raids and send everyone home etc etc' isn't going to wash forever.

You are right, it is very hard to break religious bigotry, these PI churches that suck the wealth out of their communities while preaching that the lord wnats you to beat your child are a danger, but I'm hopeful Labour can break those bonds.

Heh. But I have to say it is that sort of 'Whitey knows best' attitude that will turn a lot of PIs off Labour.

Yeah much better that Churchy knows best huh, those churches that strip the wealth from their communities, those churches with priests who spend that wealth at Sky Casino, those churches that name the family who have donated the lowest amount that week, those churches that recommend you go to a loan shark and borrow the money - oh yes Churchy knows best doesn't it Anon - and as for 'whitey' - let's see Anon, what was the PI unemployment rate before Helen Clark came to power - just over 14%, now after 9 years of Labour PI unemployment is just over 6% - yes that sounds like 'whitey Labour' really screwing over the PI communities doesn't it Anon!
Sorry bomber, but the PI community has more respect for their church ministers than for "whitey".
The churches may be sucking their money, but they are their churches, run by their people.
As for "whitey", well they put PI MP's up on corruption charges, for doing things the Island way.
Now to you, the churches are evil, and Phillip Field is a crook, but thats just one more white mans view.
Now, how do you try and show PI people the error of their ways, without sounding like a patronisng white man, who thinks he knows best for the black man.

You seem to be assuming that I have some homey love for these churches - I don't, in fact I totally agree with your points about screwing the people out of their hard earned cash, there are plenty that don't do this but plenty that do - tarring them all with the same brush isn't going to do anyone any favours. Folole Muliaga was giving a lot of money to her church, she might well have been able pay her power bill, might well still be alive.
But it obviously wasn't something that those people who made so much mileage out of her death wanted to mention when they were looking for someone to blame.....

Good points, but what I am trying to say is that these churches still have plenty of influences over PI communities and they don't like these things that Labour has done (mostly to appease the greens I would think) so this is why you get a back lash.

Weren't you the one who first used whitey in this debate...Heh. But I have to say it is that sort of 'Whitey knows best' attitude that will turn a lot of PIs off Labour.

Yes corruption by your own family is much easier to accept isn't it?
As for "whitey" - again you used that term first, well they put PI MP's up on corruption charges, for doing things the Island way.
Oh - the 'island' way, virtual slave labour and the promise of residancy is the 'isalnd' way is it?
Now to you, the churches are evil,
No, only the ones that suck money out of their communities and return nothing are evil, they are plenty of white churches that do the same.
and Phillip Field is a crook,
I think the charges against Philip suggest he is more a crook than my opinion.
but thats just one more white mans view.
No I think you will find a MANY people of MANY cultures who think those things.
Now, how do you try and show PI people the error of their ways, without sounding like a patronisng white man, who thinks he knows best for the black man.
How about we look at the facts Anon, something you refused to look at in my last post, so let me repost it for you... let's see Anon, what was the PI unemployment rate before Helen Clark came to power - just over 14%, now after 9 years of Labour PI unemployment is just over 6% - yes that sounds like 'whitey Labour' really screwing over the PI communities doesn't it Anon
Didn't Jones support one of the Christian parties for a while?
the change in PI unemployment is hardly a 'fact'
more likely due to huge numbers of PIs being moved onto sickness benefits for obesity reasons.
and if the charges against taito phillip field suggest he is a criminal then i guess the same applies to the tuhoe activists?
