Palin - Moose burgers and semi-automatics

Triumphant Palin wows media and party
With a forceful speech that served as her introduction to millions of Americans, Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin yesterday seduced many who had spent days doubting her candidacy. It wasn't just a home run, said CNN's Wolf Blitzer at the St Paul, Minnesota, convention - it may have been a grand slam. "A very auspicious debut," said NBC's Tom Brokaw. It was a "perfect populist pitch", said Jeff Greenfield of CBS. "Terrific," said Mort Kondracke on Fox News Channel. "A star is born," said Chris Wallace on Fox, a view echoed by Blitzer and by Anderson Cooper on CNN.
Really? I saw a woman with a carefully crafted speech from Bush’s former speech writer rub all the hate spots of the Republicans with the usual tired tactics. McCain picked her because she will appeal to the crazy evangelical base without terrifying the independents. If McCain had selected Mike ‘Rapture’ Huckabee the Independents would have fled and if he had picked Romney the Morman, the evangelical’s would have fled, and anyone else wouldn’t have made a media splash. The problem of course is that it blunts McCains experience attack against Obama and it calls into question McCains judgment, putting a person with zero foreign relations experience other than shooting moose near the Russian border within a heartbeat of the Presidency next to the 200 year old McCain really asks questions about his judgment. That said anti-abortion, gun-loving Palin is a compelling story that connects with the anti-intellectual streak within small town America while marrying its cousin myth that ‘anyone can grow up to be President’ – and sadly as 2004 proved, their illegitimate offspring of ignorance vote en mass.

Doesn't Joe Biden blunt Obama's change message? Obama has no foreign policy experiance......
The U.S. is a complex place, the Democrats keep abandoning the Left in a hopeless attempt to win over this imaginary and homogeneous middle America. There are gun loving pro-abortionists, antiwar christian conservatives.
The imaginary left/right, conservative/liberal, you're-either-with-us-or-against-us myth that is perpetuated by the fundies on both sides (in NZ and the US) is destroying politics and debate worldwide, as witnessed on this site any debate quickly becomes a slanging match. Get this, the Republicans (National) are right about some things and the Democrats (Labour) are right about others! Both are wrong about heaps! Crazy hey?
Your average American is no more stupid than your average NZ'er or Australian or European, but Americans do tend to have more of an individualist, libertarian streak. Like here, some people vote the way they've always voted, some vote on the big issues, some on the small issues, some just vote for whatever they feel like that particular day.
Anyway, back on topic...
I'm not a conservative, but I can see the attraction of the McCain/Palin ticket over the Obama/Biden one, in fact I'd go so far as to say McCains choice was a masterstroke. Biden comes across as a slimy career politician, Palin is glamorous small town mom, the yanks will go nuts for her.
Democracy is a myth - or a disaster.
pity the poor soon-to-be - newlyweds , her daughter "Bristol" ( a benny hill name if ever i heard one) and her boyfriend - cos mama's running for vp they HAVE to get married - talk about a shotgun wedding.
the woman is AWFUL- and any ideas they had that she might attract the "Hillary Vote " are shot down in flames... shes far too right wing for that
Bring back Ron Paul!!!!!!
Democracy is a myth - or a disaster.
And your alternative to democracy is?
Oh, you don't have one? Shush then sweety.
Democaracy is crap it gave the world George W - TWICE !!!!!!
Yeah bring back Ron Paul!
"Bring back Ron Paul!!!!!!"
He never went anywhere.....sadly the trouble with Ron Paul is that he maintains this old fashioned idea that politics should primarily involve people's feelings about the economy. Who needs the economy when you've got a 17 year old duffed daughter of an ex beauty queen dominating the debate?
Yes, the US IS incredibly diverse, but as many Americans will tell you - the flyover states have it. Dumbfuckistan it may be (not my term, an american friend's) but issues like abortion, religion and diddles-up-where? are election swingers.
PS - Ron Paul also does a good line in nut job if you look closely......it's not all nut, but there's a high nut quotient.
McCain's got crazy christian Palin and John Key has got crazy christian Bill English here.
Bristol and Trigger, just a small piece of evidence, there is much worse this is one of the more harmless bits.
A creationist of course but thats democracy for you, Obama would be soon prentend to believe that if its what it took to be voted in by the people.
